    VW replaced engine

In 2014 we purchased a good used 2011 Golf Comfortline 118TSI with 20,000 km as our previous ageing Korean car had no power and we were very pleased. We serviced as per the logbook and topped up the SAE5W30 oil as we learned it was consuming, but not much, just 5L/year and no blue smoke emissions. Just after our 3 year warranty timed out our local VW dealer advised us that 2 cylinders were not achieving design compression. A further study revealed the piston tops cracked and regrettably the whole engine needed to be replaced. We learned from the Dealer that this vintage 118TSI suffered from under-designed pistons. The Dealer replaced the engine at cost of VW Australia and we were very grateful. Credit earned where credit is due. Hopefully my karma will improve. Thank you.
