VW Polo check engine light

my daughter just bought her first car VW polo 2010 it occasionally has the engine light come on and then sometimes goes into limp mode. unfortunately every time we plug a scan tool into it there are no errors found. We took it to a service center who also came up with nothing on the scan tool but advised that the pressure control valve for the turbo required replacement.
so best part of $1000 later we've had it replaced and 2 days later back in limp mode.
when it goes into limp mode the EPC light also comes on
I'm planning to take it back but was curious to what others have experienced with similar issues.

What type of scan tool are you using and which service center did you go to? A VW service center or at least a VW specialist? If neither of these then the diagnoses would be slightly suspect ...
