    Turbo Fail

    Hi All

I have a MK7 Golf r and the turbo has failed. I have read some info that this is not uncommon and that VW are most likely aware, but choose not to act. Anyone else heard the same thing?

The car has a stage 1 tune which has been in for a while, but I have heard of turbos failing on completely stock cars.

I need to replace it but I'm getting quotes in the vicinity of $5k for a revision of the IS38, which from all accounts is fine.

My question is has anyone else replaced their turbo, if so is $5K about right???

I have thought about approaching VW Australia, but I highly doubt they will lift a finger.

Yes it’s not uncommon failure particularly in earlier models. There were numerous revisions of the turbo due to problems with it.

Good luck getting anything from VW if your car is tuned unless you can go completely back to stock. Also given your car is likely out of warranty they may also decline. It wi likely cost an inspection fee to go down this route so take that into consideration.

For a brand new turbo it wont be cheap but im sure you could get one imported from the UK or USA for a good deal less than $5k.

Otherwise the option would be to find a 2nd hand turbo off someone with a Golf R who has changed their turbo to a larger one. Otherwise, a shop in Sydney like GCG Turbos could no doubt recondition your original turbo.

Well known VIC workshop. In this link they are offering an upgraded IS38 turbo, but you could get in touch to see if they can offer a standard IS38, otherwise grab the upgraded one: Snail460 IS38 Hybrid Turbocharger — Underground Performance
