Qld Newbie with Passat to repair

Well looking at the newbie corner today is the day for QLD newbies.

Any way I am a euro enthusiast that owns an e34 535i manual & usually lurks in Bmwforums. My old man has a B5 V6 4 motion Passat that when going for its pink slip they identified coolant leaking onto the timing belt. They told him it would be a $3500 job to repair, due to the cost of the repair he lost interest in the car & has let it sit for a few months now. He told me he would Ebay the car to get rid of it & i told him that he would get only hundreds of dollars for it. I suggested he drive to me in Qld & I would replace the TB & do some other repairs & he may be able to get a few grand for it.

So depending on how well the repairs go I may actually not want to hand it back to him as when going & reliable it is such a nice car to drive.

so I guess ill be be looking to lean on some of the experience of fellow enthusiasts along the way if i can't sort it out myself so thanks in advance.
