    Our Second Second-hand V5 Bora

    Hi All,

    Just posting the obligatory start-up.

    My wife and I just purchased our second V5 Bora. Our first Bora, which we had bought off a friend and had only owned for 11 months came to an untimely end. It was the meat in the sandwich between my Mitsubishi Triton and a Toyota Hiace. The missus was following me to a mechanic to drop the ute off when traffic came to a sudden stop. We both managed to stop (just) but the guy in the Hiace behind her was not so quick, or wasn't paying attention at all considering the speed he hit her. The Bora copped a full rear end hit which shunted her into the Triton's tow bar which punctured a nasty hole through the grill and radiator. But the damage didn't end there, the rear guards and roof became a concertina and the end result was a write-off.

    We were devastated. It was quite possibly the best car we had owned. We have owned other cars since, but never got the same level of satisfaction. And whilst not actively looking for a new car, the new Bora came up at a good price and we jumped on it.

    The first model we had was a 2005, this one is 2002. There's not a lot of difference between them, it's even the same colour. The 2005 model had nicer, softer head rests and I think the alloys were smarter, but that's about it. The new one (2002) only has 120K on the clock and is in very good condition. Main points I need to look at are;

    1. replace the oil breather hose which disintegrated in my hands on the weekend and was probably contributing to a slightly lumpy idle
    2. find the source of a fuel smell entering the cabin, pretty sure it is from the engine bay as I couldn't detect anything around the fuel pump under the passenger seat
    3. fix the scratched up trim
    4. replace a bit of chrome moulding
    5. figure out why the cruise control won't engage, suspect it is just the set button in the stalk
    6. clean up a badly faded headlight (only driver side) - have the Meguires kit ready to go

    I suspect the suspension could do with a refresh but it isn't a priority at the moment.

    I haven't got any photos of the new Bora, but will get around to it in time.

    Here's our less conventional ride, which also helped drive the decision to get the Bora, this one is not so efficient for shopping runs or drop-offs. But it does go better off road.
