    Newbie to VW

    Hi all,

Main reason I am jumping on the forums is that I am currently sitting on my hands waiting for the 2016 Golf R to hit the showroom here in Adelaide. I currently drive a huge V8 barge and while I enjoy it it's time to look at something new and back to something smaller (had a WRX previously). Already been down the to dealership and introduced myself, I've got my name on the list for a test drive as soon as they come into the showroom

Are you looking at the 2016 R or the limited edition?

If I were you and could wait the extra time, I'd seriously look at the Wolfsburg Edition due in October.

It'll come with a number of options as standard:

    • Black 19" Pretoria alloy wheels
    • Black Roof Rails and Black Mirrors
    • Carbon Nappa leather appointed upholstery
    • Wolfsburg crest badge
    • Driver assistance package including Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Assist with City Emergency Brake, Blind Spot Monitor and more.

Probably the most important are the 19" Pretoria alloys which are way better than the stock wheels.

Actually I've been having that discussion today, the pricing seems like if you go for the Wolfsburg edition you basically get the extras for almost no extra cost? If that's the case then I would be more than happy to wait, as it is I am looking at a couple of months before I put an order in.

As you guys are the experts would you recommend this as well?

Edit: Just had a further look, the dealer is offering it at $62.5k and then I would just need to add the sunroof at $1.9k which basically brings me to the same price as a standard one but instead I get a Wolfsburg edition. Just to confirm is it based of the 2016 model (with MIB-II)?

Welcome to the forum. I only joint a few days earlier.

Yesterday I took the MY16 WRX Premium for a test drive, but having just rolled off the truck with 7km's on the clock, I figured I would keep the revs below 4,000rpm. I felt sorry for it. Even so, the performance potential was clearly evident. Earlier on in the year I had taken a MY15 WRX for a 'proper drive' and I must say, it was fun. Apart from the upgraded infotainment system, basic driver assist functions, weird camera showing the front left wheel to avoid kerbing and 18" rims, the biggest difference of MY16 over MY15 was its better fit and finish. I know, strange thing to say, but the car felt more solid, the panel gaps were more consistent.

Coming out of Golf VI GTI, I decided to upgrade to MY15 Golf VII GTI p/p a couple of months ago. That didn't last, and I placed an order last Friday for a MY16 R which I confirmed today will be arriving in Melbourne on the 13/08. I can't wait.

I agree with 'tigger73' on waiting for the Wolfsburg edition, but be aware, if you're not fussed about the black highlights and pretoria wheels, as I wasn't, you will get a better deal going for a 'standard' R.

Due to my trade-in, it's not directly comparable, but with standard leather and optioned up driver assist I managed to get MY16 R for $4K less than I would've being paying for MY16 R Wolfsburg Edition.

    Just a thought. Good luck.

VW often run a "special edition" car later in the model series to bring back buyers into the showroom. I think due to the limited nature of it you'll find it easier to sell and also the other plus is that it doesn't look like every other Mk7 R on the road.

I guess the thing you have to weigh up is if you like the black wheels/trim as the black-out look isn't to everyone's taste. I think you'll find that it has all the other MY16 updates plus the Wolfsburg pack - black-out trims/wheels. I know the Golf R Wagon which is also coming with the "Wolfsburg" model designation is coming in a model specific colour (Oryx White pearl). Not sure if this is the same case for the hatch.

Chatted to the dealers here in SA. They both said that Wolfsburg is pretty close to being sold out, with the SA dealers now taking orders from Victoria as they are all sold out. If I want one it's looking like I would need to place an order in the next few days, something that I am not financially ready for.

With that in mind I was also told by both dealers that a standard R is about a 5-6 month wait currently, which is about where I would be expecting to get one. So my thinking now is that in the next couple of weeks I will put in an order for an 2016 R and then we start the waiting game for January 2016.
