    Newbie interested in MIB2 retrofit

Hi I am starting to get the parts together to Retrofit from an RNS510 to Composition Media but I don't know much about the Composition Media units from overseas and Does it matters much whether the unit is from North American region or European as the Map data SD Card from Australia needs to be used anyhow. I know some units have DAB or Virus XM or WLan but how important is this when deciding to buy a unit from USA or OK

    Composition media doesn't have navigation.
    Thats discover media.
You need an EU unit, not North America.
With or without DAB is up to you.
If it hasn't been patched then it will O oy work for a cumulative 8 hours then component protection will be activated and it will stop working.

    Thanks kamold

Sorry yes I did mean Discover Media and I have read your thread so I guess I am about to go thru the same experience
I think I will go with DAB+ for future proofing to some degree
I was going to get from someone reputable so I hope it will be patched but how can you tell other than wait 8 hours

You need to see the patch board soldered onto the bottom of the main board.
That's the only way to know if it's there.

I am new to forums so please excuse any stupid questions but I have seen numerous units for sale online and I assume I will need the 5C0035680C and they usually say they have a "code" or the unit is "unlocked" which to me says it should be fine to install and the same goes if I were to buy new from a VW dealer, I assume it would come with the code for CP so why does the unit need a patch and have the 8 hour limit ? There are warnings online about shonky deals so I am a bit suspect of eBay deals and they usually only have 30 day return policy anyhow with no warranty. I am keen to go for a DAB unit, as the NAR units appear less compatible with Australia. I don't understand why Maps should be an issue when the Australian data card is installed, yet different units are made for NAR or EU so why was it an issue when you were converting to MIB2 ?. I will need to buy from someone who is reputable with good support no doubt and I don't want to be sending units back and forth overseas and buying reconditioned or patched is always a concern

These navigation units are not like the previous generation where a 4 digit pin is all that is required to unlock them.
They make use of the same security system which is used in the new MQB/MLB cars - Commponent Protection.
Components such as the radio, instrument cluster, radar etc all talk to one another at startup and if any of them have changed, they are flagged by the Component Protection system and become locked.
The only way to unlock them is using dealer tools which check a database for stolen parts before allowing the server to send the correct cryptographically signed certificate to 'bless' the vehicle as having all original approved parts and features.

As these units are designed to be in a car that supports Component Protection, they look for a CP master when the car starts. If they do not detect a CP master (its in the instrument cluster in a MY16 Tiguan, Caddy, T6 Transporter etc where these units come from) then an 8 hour cumulative timer starts. Once 8 hours expires without being able to verify that the radio is in the original vehicle, Component Protection is activated and all functions stop in the unit.

So if you take a Discover Media (PQ platform) out of the original installed vehicle and turn it on on the bench, or in a new car, it will appear to work perfectly. Until the 8 hours of total runtime is reached. Then its bricked. You have no way to tell how long the unit has run outside of its original vehicle.

If you purchase a brand new unit from VW parts it already has CP active, and needs to be installed into a vehicle that has CP support, then connected to the VW servers to remove the CP flag. Then all the feature codes (nav, bluetooth, app connect) etc need to be applied. They are all individual chargeable licenses.

So when you first installed your unit, what did the Navigation do when it was from EU and you wanted to install the AU Database ? did it say error of some sort or did it still show EU ? was there an update to install or firmware ?

It needs a genuine VW maps sdcard.
Then the unit needs to be coded for Au.
Otherwise it will give an error about 8nvalid navigation database.
