Gumtree is the best source for registered/running examples. Prices are slowly increasing and sub $2000 cars can still be found but expect a lot of work to get these cheap ones back on the road. Normal prices are around $4k to $5k for a 4 door, much more for a 2 door.

If you aren't handy with a spanner or aren't willing to learn then don't get a MK2 unless you have a lot of money. Mechanical parts are cheap but labour costs will kill you and these old cars always need something fixing.

Make sure the one you buy has a very good body with all the trim in good condition as spares are very hard to get and expensive. Mechanically most parts can be sourced cheaply from a MK3 and I'd recommend buying one as a spare parts car.

The MK2 makes a great daily with just a few mods and if set up right can show up a lot of modern sporty cars through the corners. Mine did 1000 ks per week and was fun to drive. If my wife let me I'd buy another one tomorrow.

Check out the link in my signature to see what's needed to turn a 25 year old car into something you can drive every day and put a smile on your face every time you get into it.

    Cheers

    Paul

Hi Paul,I have searched random internet sites and others - FakeBook,Carpoint,Carsales,Gumtree,Trading Point with very few in South East QLD.

I do want a project so I can bring out the tools also good to have reasons to buy more, the only annoying repairs I find are exhausts and auto boxes.
Hard to say which are the most fun for me between electrical, brakes, suspension or upgrades.
I have seen some Mk1' projects under $1,000 but I have got stuck on Mk2's,I like your MK2 also not looking to go Mk3 too new for me

Good to see that you aren't afraid to get you hands dirty. Any gearbox scares the crap out of me but I do love a suspension challenge.

It's very quiet on the used car sites. Last month there were a few, looks like they have been snapped up.

Give Brian a call at GTI Imports - 02 9653 1114. He's sometimes hard to get hold of but he might know of one for sale. I spoke to him last month and he had turned down one for less than $1000 because he's already working on a few projects.

There is a red 16v 2 door on the market in Brisbane but it has a blown motor and he still wants $5000 for it which is way too much.

Pretty soon the only place you'll be able to get a MK2 for a reasonable price will be Japan. They are MK2 mad and have a lot over there.

Building up a MK2 as a daily is achievable and if you need any advice / tips let me know. Always happy to pass on info.
