    Newbie

    Hi

I just bought a 2002 golf mk4 1.6L 5speed manual for my son who will be getting his licence in 6 months time.
It needs some work due to its age, but my son and i are looking forward to getting some helpful advice from this forum.

    Cheers
    Alex

The biggest worry is the gearbox. If the code is DUU then the crown wheel is riveted on to the carrier. A lot of the time the rivets break and the crown wheel smashes the case from the inside.
The proper fix is to pull the gearbox apart and replace the rivets with bolts.

Check cambelt history and if the water pump has been replaced ( plastic impeller breaks )
Also check the thermostat as it may be the electronic type and they can break and stick open ( plastic housing breaks )
Use 95 Ron fuel as they run a lot smoother.

    Otherwise enjoy the car

    Always fixing my bora
