Welcome aboard!
Australia needs more MK1 race cars!
I use to own a Mk1 2 door, that was an Autocross and Khana car, half cage and Bilstiens, poly bushed, down draft Weber, pretty basic, but with hind sight should have kept it
Want to get another one, looking at building a race car (IPRA, for those who know), and have been looking for a little while
Always run FWD, currently in a grandma car, Ford Telstar V6, still it races it's class alright, mainly against BMW E30's
Been racing for a long while, have a bit of experience about what is required (including the actual costs!!!)
A friend refereed me here

Welcome
I'm using my mk1 as a daily for a few years until I can dereg it and set it up properly, make sure to post the progress when you get your hands on one!
Will do, finding a car isn't as easy as it use to be, don't mind having to fix the rusty footwells, but paying a premium for the privilege when people say it is a good one...
Too true, and don't worry, I will be a lot faster than Bruce![]()
(easy to do, just spend more money, and go 2 litre not 1600)
My Telstar has 106kW at the wheels and weighs 1200 kg, does 54's at PI, with this we will be looking for 300kg less and more power. Building with a friend who use to race them in the UK. Will keep running Telsar in 2015, hope to be out in 2016
Depending on current IPRA regs on how much stuff you can chuck out of the car you might get it down closer to 800kg
My MK1 has done 1:54 at PI. I need more seat time to make it go faster. Car is willing, driver skills are lacking. Aero is a bit of an issue for me at the moment too.

Are you going to build a 2 door or 4 door?
Just asking because I know of a couple of 2 doors that need rescuing.
Cheers
Paul
900 is including driver and all liquids (ie Race weight) remember we need a full cage that adds around 50kg, not like the old days when we had Alloy (Had one of those from an old club car guy Bill something, Greek surname, too long ago to remember!)
Definitely 2 door
Definitely send me a PM!
(I guess I can receive them)

You're thinking of Bill Malkoutzis, he's still very active in the VW club scene.
900kg is about right. My MK1 is 820kg wet without driver and has a full steel cage.

He's the one, it was 20 years ago! (well a few more)
Back in those days I use to hang out with David Rosengrave (delivered Pizza together), sat on the motorkahna panel with John (though I represented Mini Club)
Want to get back in to a light car, easier to go faster cheaper (is a relative statement) so that should be my maximum weight. Of course it would be easy to save 10 kg between the steering wheel and the seat,,,
John's still racing too, I sold him an 1800 for his Golf a couple of years ago.
You may or not remember me from those days, I was the one that wiped out the timing gear at the old Gippsland hill climb track in my kermit green beetle.
I also headed up Type VW club for a year or so back in the day. We've probably met.
There's still lots of people from our era in the scene.
