    G'day all.

So I took the better half out car shopping yesterday. She's had her Mazda 3 for long enough (MY04), and with a new job coming up, and more driving, I think she's pretty deserving of a new car.

She's got good taste (she's with me after all ), showing a liking for the new Series 7 Golfs.

We roll up to one of the local VW dealers, start poking around a TDi Highline. Nice enough. A well spoken English gentleman casually strolls over and asks us if we need any help. We point out the Highline and we start chatting about the TDi vs TSi... Long story short, we end up taking the TDi for a drive. It's a lovely car, well appointed, comfortable and more room than the Mazda 3 sedan.

There was just one thing missing. It didn't have the 'flair' that she wanted. I thought it was alright, in fact personally, I quite liked it, and would be suitable for her and the kids.

I said to her that the next step up from that is the GTI (I'm quietly getting excited at the fact she might sway toward the GTI). We get back to the yard, park the TDI and head over to the GTI for a look. With her bum plonked in the drivers seat she says that it doesn't look too much different... Then she starts noticing the red. The stitching and the tartan, and asks if the leather has the same stitching... which it does.. (she wants leather). She's not a fan of the red stitching. Bummer I thought...

She jumps out, and points over at the black R two cars over. I told her that it's considerably more expensive and far more sporty than all the rest. She parks her bum again and looks around. She's all "Ooh I like that, and that's neat", pointing to the blue dials and grey stitching on the steering wheel. "I like this one." she says.

So from coming in to look at a $40k-ish TDi Highline, we're now picking colours and options on a $60k+ R. Other than the expense, it's been a pretty damn successful couple hours of car yard time. Meanwhile me, I'm crapping myself with excitement that in our stable we're more than likely have a Series 7 Golf R. This will go alongside my daily drive of a 2012 NW Pajero. Which I'm looking at going to a Touareg at around April 2016.

So next step is to take one for a full day test drive, as we were running out of time to take one for a drive then and there.

    Hmm...

    Stay tuned,

    Aaron.

    Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like an interesting day in the car yard for sure. Your wife clearly has good (read expensive) taste

Be interested to find out what she feels after taking the R for a drive. If there's too much "boy racer" noise that can reduced as it's artificially piped into the car.

If you're looking at Mk 7 Golf, there's not a bad choice in the range. You'll just have to convince her that the AWD on the Golf R is a good "safety feature"
