Hey VWwatercooled.com.au!
I’m a longtime Golf owner (MK5 2.0 TDI since new). Have always worked on my own car for major bits and pieces. I don’t know why I haven’t joined up since owning - I remember when it was 2002 an my high-school friend owned a very cool MK4 R32 and spoke fondly of this community.
The car is now starting to show its age. I’ve always seen it as a reliable (not a project) vehicle. I’m into my motorcycles being the not so reliable project vehicles.
Also, I specifically wanted details on finally changing stock discs and pads and wanted more information on picking the right choice, thought this would be a great place to ask around.
Looking forward to be more involved with this community - I might have some answers to share.
Cheers,
H
Hi and welcome hueylui. Good to hear the MK5 TDI has been a faithful car....they are pretty much 20yr old car now so repairs are to be expected to keep it going. Overall they are very reliabel engines though.
For disks and pads, I have used Bosch, DBA, Bremtec and Brembo - honestly I cant fault any of them, but for a reasonably priced option I really like the Brembos. They have a charcoal coloured painted hub so they dont rust and look horrible shortly after fitting them.
Pads and Discs for VW GOLF V (1K1) 2.0 TDI
Front disks (should be 288mm diameter disks on the front):
[B]Front disks
Rear disks (several options available...you may need to measure your current disks first. But I am pretty sure your car should have the 256mm rear disks)
Option 1 (256mm x 10mm) Rear disks option 1
Option 2 (256mm x 12mm) hopefully its these ones because they are cheap as hell Rear discs option 2
Option 3 (282mm x 12mm) Rear disks option 3
For pads, I have also tried many different brake pads over the years. Im currently running the Brembo NAO Ceramic Pads in my car and honestly they are just as good as other pads costing twice as much. The ceramic pads are very low dust too which is a bonus.
If the cost of the Brembo's is a bit too much, then have a look at Run Auto Parts and they have 20% of Bendix brakes at the moment.
