Do you know if both boxes are out of TDIs? Could be all sorts of internal differences, ratios etc. Don't throw away the old box, probably still has some value in the mechatronics etc.

First post ... One small step for mankind!!
Have inherited my brother-in-law's Golf with grinding noises when in gear and moving (most concerning in 1st & 2nd).
VW quoted $19K for a 'new' box. And spending $9k to have the box rebuilt in Victoria is also out of the question.
Whilst it has a great history - country miles and serviced by VW dealerships - and is in very tidy condition, with 220,000km on the clock I cannot see it being worth much more than $10k anyway!
Found a second hand box out of a car that was shunted from the rear ... $2500.
So it sits on the floor of my shed ... along side the unit that I wrestled out earlier today. (Imagine it will be an even bigger and more delicate wrestling match to get the replacement back in!)
Discovered today that this box is a HQN. What is the difference between this box and my HXU?
Will the computer be able to talk to it?
And will I be able to drive when it is reinstalled without first resetting the computer to let it know that it has a 'new' mechatronics unit?
The nearest VW dealer is not exactly close! Can anyone with VAG COM reset this for me.
Enjoying this VW dabble and am praying I can hand it back to him ... fixed!
Also, recognise that an oil and filter change would be a priority assuming it all works.
Any advice appreciated!!
(Looking forward to buying a van in the future ... want a diesel. probably T4 Caravelle or Transporter with rear seats. So looking forward to spending a bit more time in this forum.)

Never got to see the car ... the box was supplied by Sydney Wide European Autos. Confirmed that it was from a 1.9TDi. Gave them my engine and gearbox codes (BXE HXU)
