Cool Man buys Golf, joins forum......

Just purchased my first Golf (also my first dub) earlier this week, a Mk7 Comfortline (Brand new superseded stock). Awaiting delivery (I'm 6 hours from dealer) hopefully mid next week. It doesn't have DAP, but such is life.

Will be my first car I can call mine (and do stuff to) in 10 years after 3 company vehicles that were rather uninspiring (but hey, a free car is a good car). The thing I am most excited about isn't the car now that I have discovered the OBDeleven. Suffice to say my wife is not overly excited about the fact I am getting an app that allows me to reprogram the car! I, on the other hand, am

Showed the OBDeleven to a mate who has a VF wagon with a few programming things that bug him, all I got was

Welcome, Welcome! Always great to see another new person coming in.

OBDeleven is a great tool by all accounts (and relatively cheap) so isn't a bad thing to have around in the tool box (personally im a Ross Tech guy). That said, most people buy one, play with it for a while then it ends up in a drawer and is usually only pulled out to work on other peoples cars since they have done all the things for themselves. If you've got spare cash, it's a nice to have so you can scan from time to time and check error messages... although you'd prefer to never see one! EDIT: It's also Android only if that makes a difference to you.

Plan B: Do the research and see what tweaks you want to get someone else to do them for you at some meet somewhere... There enough of us around that I'm sure someone could sort you out.

Thanks - i've had a quick look at the VCDS & I reckon OBDeleven will do me for the time being. I considered VCDS when I saw the base one was $199, but by the time you add horrendous shipping + AUD conversion its circa $350, OBD11 I can get away with for $200 and change, which includes an android tablet which I can use day to day to keep the 2yo away from the iPad.

I could get someone else to do the changes, but most of the appeal for me is in playing with it. There's a few things I will probably do initially, mainly windows on remote/close when raining/ignition off, cluster carbon BG off the autoinstruct list. I believe I can use it to enable traffic as well, that alone will make it worth it. Have been reading about voice control, might flick the dealer an email and see what the go is there but if it's as exxy as it seems then I will stick to Siri.

Admins welcome new member, cordiality ensues...

Voice control is a SWaP (software as a product) licensed feature which you need to buy for circa $420 plus labour charge to load it at the dealer (requires online dealer tools to perform the activation).
Some have been successful in having the dealer absorb the cost by pointing out the fact there is a button on the head unit and it doesn't do anything...'You mean I just paid you $X,000 for a car and you want me to pay you MORE to get this button to do something???? Why give me a button at all if it doesn't do anything???' etc etc.
    YMMV

Said new member has more than his fair share of forum moderating/admin experience elsewhere, so you will get nothing other than cordiality from me!

Meh. I've enjoyed not arguing for every dollar on this purchase (unusual for me), it was a done deal after 3 phone calls and an email over the space of a couple of hours. I wont be going to the dealer, the truck will drop it off at my front door ready to go. I might email them out of curiosity while they still have it, but meh. I might have done it up to $150 for the sake of completeness, but the chances of me using it over Siri are probably slim at best so if they come back at $400+ they can go jump. Past the purchase the dealer will get nothing out of me anyway so their motivation to do it would be slim, more chance of bargaining with my local dealer if they want the servicing over the next 5 years.
