Looking at Stage 1 tunes for Mk2 Tiguan

Hi. Currently driving a stock Mk6 Golf R. Love that car. Looking at updating to something newer and with more space, and have settled on a Mk2 Tiguan Wolfsburg Edition (Australian packaging - based on 162 R-Line with all options). I came to the forum, because - noting the Tiguan has the same brilliant EA888 engine as my current Golf R (with the GTI turbo and internals) - I'm keen to get a stage 1 tune done - which should give the Tiguan better 0-100 performance than my current Golf R! Can't wait. Have posted over in the "Mk2 Tiguan Tuning" thread.

Good luck finding a Wolfsburg as they’re all sold out and only come up occasionally secondhand.

Welcome. The Mk2 Tiguan's (and Mk7 GTI & R) engine is actually quite different to that in your current Mk6 R. The Mk6 R engine is actually a generation old and is an FSI (even though they badged it as a TSI to remain consistent with the rest of the Mk6 range), and first came out around 2006 in the Audi S3 and Mk5 Golf GTI "Pirelli" special edition. The Mk6 R engine is known as the EA113.

So the engine in the Mk2 Tiguan is actually more closely related to the Mk6 GTI engine (known as the EA88 but thankfully has been heavily revised and shouldn't suffer the issues that engine had.

Anyway the Tiguan 162 TSI is a great platform and quite popular on here for modifying as basically anything made for the Mk7 GTI/R fits the Tiguan.

Thanks Tigger... You're not wrong - there are all of 5 Wolfies up on carsales.com.au at the moment, all but 1 in QLD. I live in NSW, and the 1 here lacks a sunroof. And thanks to COVID and QLD's closed borders, I can't get up there to pick one up! Luckily I'm a patient man

The other option is to buy a new one a give it a “black pack” treatment. Paint the wheels and get the chrome bits wrapped in black.

You’ll get a much better deal on finance (current 2.99% offer) on a new car which sometimes makes it cheaper in terms of repayments than say a 2year old car at 8%.

Plus the warranty on the new car is 5 years compared to remainder of a 3 year warranty on the older car.

You can probably afford to spend $500 blacking out a 2019/20 car. Some of the dealers even do it to their own stock due to the demand for a black pack.

I stand corrected! So Mk2 Tig 162 driveline broadly = GTI engine & turbo + R gearbox & AWD? Is it the CJXB in the Tig or another variant?

Been reading a bit about the EA888 CJXB / CJXC differences - seems there's more to it than a tune and a bigger turbo! But I trust there's typically no drama with tuned CJXBs in Tigs (even stage 3) because they're generally not out being punished in all-day track sessions where the CJXC uprating (+other R accouterments such as brakes, etc) is called-for?

Easy mate, for the chrome bits any decent automotive wrapper can do it, for the wheels get them gloss black powder coated. Only annoying thing is they have to be off the car for that lol. You could get them wrapped as well, but personally I think powder coating is the better option.
