my introduction:

My first Kombi ( Bulli ) - T2 - early seventies model - died the rust death from Scandinavian winter neglect R.I.P.

My second Kombi - is a T4 SWB HiRoof - with the 5cylinder 2.4 litre Diesel engine - manual 5-speed
- getting towards 280,000+ km now
Best car I've ever had!
I'm so impressed with the build quality
- incredibly well protected against corrosion, has spent a lot of time on the beach, rarely washed, never waxed, no sign of corrosion inside doors, panels etc
- only rust problem is where windscreen fitters have removed paint - when scraping off glue/seal from old smashed windscreen and fitted new screen without rust protecting exposed steel
- only complaint is a somewhat weak clutch the clutch - replaced twice
- she's been so good I might hold on to her as a second / loan car ...

advice to T4 owners:
check/replace water hoses to oil filter chiller - hard to get to - goes to round heat exchanger above oil filter ... (may not be fitted on all engines?)
mine burst once - and I did not notice temp gauge / warning - dropping all the cooling water while towing a heavy boat on a 40 +day
engine got extremely hot - actually stopped - but started again after cool-off
caused head damage - $3,000 head re-build

the rest of the T4 2.4 litre 5-cyl diesel engine not re-built - still going fine with reasonable oil consumption ... impressive 280,000+ km

now I've bought a second hand T5.1 Transporter - 2.0 litre diesel - a LWB mid roof ex NSW ambulance, with 4-motion and 7-speed auto
MY QUESTIONS TO THIS FORUM:
- should I be concerned RE all the rumours / talk about excessive oil consumption?
- how do I know if my engine may be affected?
- what to look for? - other than monitoring oil consumption
- any preventive measures recommended?

any answers would be great!
