Interest story regarding engine faults and repair costs

This is an interest story regarding engine faults and the cost of repairs. The story may save you money.

I had engine faults with my 2017 Volkswagen caddy. I took the caddy to my local mechanic who put on aftermarket parts. This cost me $1400 and the faults were still present.

I then took the caddy to a European specialist to have the problems resolved. This cost me $2000 where I had the aftermarket parts replaced with genuine parts, but unfortunately the issues were not resolved and I still had the engine fault. Very annoying after paying $2000 with exactly the same faults.

The caddy is now booked into a dealership in Melbourne who will run a diagnostic test and identify the true faults and the exact cost to complete repairs.

The moral of my story is, I should have taken the caddy to a Volkswagen dealership in the first place, due to the complex nature of these faults. I hope the story helps you and making the right decisions to save you money.

An independent VW specialist is the other option. The tag ‘European specialist’ potentially covers a huge range of makes/models which are all quite different - it’s just not possible to be a specialist across all Euro makes, only a ‘European generalist’.

Unfortunately, the art of a good diagnosis is being lost; many places have just become parts cannons to resolve issues, and their guys get paid to change parts and move as many jobs through the door as they can.

Nothing wrong with independents; you need to find the right one. that said, some dealers can be in the above group too.

I hope your repair goes well with the dealer.

Unfortunately, I don’t know what the codes are they’re with the mechanic.
