Honda Civic to Volkswagen Golf, what to expect?

22 y.o male currently driving a '99 Honda Civic Hatch with 280,000+KM on it (the thing won't die!).
I'm currently shopping around for a replacement for old faithful. Golf seems to be the pick of the bunch for me.

The civic was my first car which I bought back in 2010 for $4000. I've put 100,000K on it since then. It's been everywhere from Goondiwindi to Byron Bay many a time, it's been a loyal companion all throughout uni. No breakdowns, no problems at all, perfect A to B car. Only real problem is it doesn't exactly instill trust in the business world

Any advice is much appreciated!

I have had a flawless run with my 2.0T 6 speed manual.

It really depends what you are looking to buy, if you are doing long distances etc so details like that may help us help you.

Glad you had a nice run with yours mate.

For me, mostly urban driving with some highway driving on the weekend (beach/golf/footy). I'm looking at spending under $25,000 so that puts me in the 90 TSI range I believe. I'd be happy with the manual version in silver.

Any input would be great!

I had a 99 civic coupe for 6 years, sold it for a 2000 audi (basically a vw), for some reason when you get an audi everyone starts talking to you. As for parts, they were not cheap as the civic cost nothing to run. I only had to replace the front wheel bearing in it.

My mate has a newer vw golf gti, 2006 i think, its great.

Anyway, in short i say go for it, you can get some nice newish gtis for around 22k these days and they shouldnt be too bad on the wallet but make sure you have some spare cash in case something goes wrong.
Unlike the civic which you could pay for parts (unlikely to ever be need) with change you find in your partners pants when doing the laundry.
