Yes these engines can drink oil with age so I’d recommend checking oil levels regularly - every fuel fill initially until you work out whether you have an oil burner or not.

You likely won’t know what oil has been put in. So if you have consumption issues you can go to a slightly heavier (5W40) oil.

The other thing to look at is to find out if your timing chain tensioner has been replaced/ is the updated part.

Earlier engines had a bad design part which could fail leading to catastrophic failure (valves hitting pistons). I think with the age of your car it should have the newer part but worth checking for peace of mind.

Looks like I have to check all these... Price of used high mileage car . Regarding carbon clean up, the intake I guess is in front of engine bay, so which mean it is easier job to be done. Expect effective and lower cost hopefully. After these , will be itchy to get those tuning upgrade

Just check that it's a VW approved oil. Not that it's so much a problem as the car is well out of warranty but I'd still use the VW approved stuff. Generally as it's tested/intended for 15k service intervals and some other oils may not last that long.

Officially it needs to be a 504.00/507.00 VW Approved Oil. There's a few on the market and yes they are fully synthetic - usually $60-$80 for 5L.

I searched that mostly 502 is referring to 5w40. I check mine the helix ultra, it is stated 502. Can't be used in this case ?

If you end up with engine failure due to an issue with the oil and you've used a non-approved oil you don't have a leg to stand on. If you've used oils then you have half a chance. Also note there's a difference between "approved" and "meets" or "tested to" or whatever other marketing terms that they want to use saying it is "equivalent". Basically if you're using an oil that "as good as" then if there's an issue you'll be going back and forth between the oil company and VW and more than likely both of these guys have deeper pockets than you for legals.

Long story short you're best off paying a bit more and using an approved oil.

But it's your car and your engine so you can out whatever oil in it you like
