    Hi there

    Hi there

I have a Mk6 GTD with lots of options. Its been in my care for 4 years now and is at the end of it's lease. Not sure whether to buy it out or sell it on. its been faultless and is a hoot to drive. Joined this forum to understand if I keep it, what to look out for at 100k+. Any advice is welcome.

    David

PS: I also have two other cars - 2011 BMW X3 and a 1994 M3 which is morphing into a track car.

    Hi there

If you love it and still enjoy driving it, then keep it i say.

In regards to servicing at 100k, you have a timing belt due at 105k and then a major service at 120k.

    - Every 60k (60k, 120k,180k etc etc) are major services.

    - Every 30k in between the major 60k services (30k, 90k, 150k etc etc) are mid level services.

    - Every 15k in between the 30k and 60k services are minor services (15k, 45k, 75k, etc etc) with the exception of the 105k (and each subsequent 105k travelled) where a timing belt service is done.

Being a diesel model, your car has a DPF (diesel particulate filter) integrated into the exhaust right up near the turbo. This filter will eventually get full and will need attention. Option 1 is to buy a new one (at considerable cost mind you) and the other option is to remove it, cut it open and wash it out with a high pressure hose before welding it back together. Option 2 works well and is MUCH cheaper than option 1.

Lucas you can get a DPF off a low km wreck out of Europe for several hundred, a proper re-bake is going to cost a few hundred, so it's not much more. The MK6 DPF has a FAR better lifespan from my monitoring so far, whereas the MKV is going to clog approx 150k, the MK6 should see 200k plus with luck, and proper driving.

Will only really be a problem to owner #2 generally!

yeah, I'm across the DPF and its idiosyncrasies. fortunately I run the car on an hour's freeway journey most weekends so the filter has a chance to regenerate. One of my staff has a Passat diesel and watching a forced regen on that was an eye opener...
