Thought I'd link this thread with DV52's new information:

I called VW Customer Care who informed me the VCM is now available as an accessory. The Voice Control Module is a SOFTWARE update therefore the Comfortline does not require any hardware installation.

The customer care consultant informed me that all dealers and service/parts centres were made aware in communications that were sent out. He was unable to quote a cost and I assume it is up to how much the dealership/service centre wants to rape you to install a program via SD card or CD.

My MY16 GTI has the capability(?) but its not functioning. I rang around dealers to activate it thinking it'd be a free fix, but got prices of $900 Brighton VW, $750 Essendon VW and $550 Hawthorn VW. This for something that is FREE in a 2003 Ford Focus.

I've just had the software update because the screen would go black, so I need to check if by some miracle the VCM is operational. If it is a software fix, has anyone seen a unofficial VW software update?

It's a SWaP (software as a product) feature which requires a unique key which needs to be entered online with VWs servers which then activate the function and tie it to your vin with a cryptographic signature.

There is no hack or way around it.

Your best bet is to use your negotiation/complaining skills to request/demand it as you paid $xx,000 for a car which has a voice button that doesn't do anything.

The dealer has to pay for the key so it's unlikely you can get it for free but it depends how good your negotiation skills are I guess...
