Don't want to be a ****, but if you can't chuck a cai on yourself. You shouldn't bother tinkering with a vr6.
I recommend you do this instead.

Hey guys,
So I need a small bit of advice. I just bought my first car about a month ago, its a 1996 mk3 golf vr6 and its completely stock at the moment. my local mechanic is willing to put a cold air intake in for me but one that fits into the factory air box. (Don't want to be pulled over and defected haha). He recommended i buy one off ebay/online somewhere cause itll be cheaper than the one they order in at the shop. Does anyone have any recommendations of what I need to buy to bring to him to fit it in. Very new to the whole car thing so a simple explanation or link to some things I need to buy would be really helpful. Thanks heaps guys!

My mechanic said he will modify the stock air box for me to fit the cai in, but hes told me to find a cai to buy myself. Does this mean i only have to look for a high-flow drop-in air filter of my choice? (k&n maybe) I just dont know what to search up when looking for one online, cheers.
Have a photo of your VR6? My old vr6 was a 96 model aswell. Still waiting for my old one to pop up on here one day.
Welcome mate!
Do some research, there is some nice simple DIY mods you can do on a Mk3 saving some $$$ and having fun along the way.
