Disassemble Centre Console

Hi,

Have a MK7 GTI and would like to get under the centre console. 1. I think the ends of an accessory plug may have fallen through and 2. Would like to see about wiring in some more accessory plugs underneath to hide my dash cam power source etc. (Yes, very OCD about neatness) For once i thought i would not just try and pull on bits until they give or a i realize a screw is hiding or sadly I break something. I have searched for ages on-line / youtube etc but cannot find a single guide. Seems odd for such a popular car.

Remove the face plate around the climate controls. I just got the edge underneath and gently pulled forward.

Remove the storage compartment that has the soft open andclose door. I tried pulling up gently on the door and it unclipped from theunit and scary as I thought I may have broken the clip. I ended up taking sometrim off the lower sides of the console nearest the footwells and got my handup to push it up and out. Must be an easier way…. Be aware there are two electrical connectionsfor the usb and 3.5mm jack attached to the storage bin. They both have release clips so don’t justtry and pull them out.






Then take out the two screws that were underneath at thefront part of the storage cavity, andthen two screws holding in the surrounding trim. That was all the screws to betaken out. Of course out them away carefully.




Then you can pull the side trim forward and feel it unclip.It may be best to try and loosen to the back and unclip forwards as there areposts at the front end to get the trim around. I managed to get them both overthe posts underneath more from gentle manipulation than good management.



The trims and those two screws you removed earlier seem tobe the only thing holding down the console. I then unclipped the gear selectorsurrounds from the main console so I could later manoeuvre the console over itand out of position. Bit of a puzzle challenge but it can be done.

Now before pulling up the console:
1) See the photo below of this post thing at the rear nearthe arrest. You have to move the console forward to get it out.
2.) Be aware as yougo of the electrical connections and undo on the way through. Fiddly littlerelease clips but all have them. Don’t just pull at them.



I hope at this point you have it out and no breakages.Putting it together was pretty straight forward but getting that big prong intoposition first was a bit of a hassle and I felt I was pressing too hard attimes to be comfortable. I also made sure I had the drinks holder cover in thecovered position in case it helped remove any bulk if it was open and rolled upat that end.
