    2000 Golf reverse gear jamming

Hello firstly i am new to the vw market. i purchased a manual 2000 golf.
when attempting to put in reverse the gear gets stuck between reverse and 1st sometimes and is in neither so when i let go of the clutch the car doesnt go foward or back but still stalls. It is very hard to pop back out and i have to force it pretty hard. However 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears change normally. What could this be from and how do i fix it? Maybe something to do with the gear selector?

Also when the car is idle the revving goes up and down very slightly? the throttle body has been changed on it only 10000k ago. Should i be concerned? Although fuel consumption is normal.

    Thanks people

Welcome, I'm sure some of the MKIV guys will be able to offer you some assistance on the Manual Box issue.

    What size engine is it?
If its a 1.6, probably the shifter has a broken linkage.
If it is a 1.8 or 2L, it may have something jamming the selector at the gearbox end.

its a 1.6 so will a broken linkage cause only the reverse gear to jam? how much will this cost to fix ?
