    118TSI owner new to forum

I have owned a Golf 118TSI since 2011 and have generally been very happy with it. It is my second car and has done 16500Km since new. I have joined the thread because I need some information on a misfire and whether it can be fixed DIY.

I worked on many cars in my early years (my favourite was a 1968 Mini Cooper S) but for the past 20 years all service and repairs were covered as a work expense tax deduction. But since owning the Gold 118TSI the tax deductions have gone and I am looking to keep costs down.

I really like the Golf and will probably keep it until I retire in a few years.

In the meantime, my daily ride is an un-marked police car.

Sell it - buy a Golf with a different engine

There are good ones out there. Our 2010 manual has never skipped a beat and is a terrific car. We're 30k km in and trouble free. In 4 years, my R36 was in frequently for electrical niggles which were solved before I sold it. The Golf- fuel, routine service and that is it. We only do about 7k km/year no oil top ups required between services.

To expand a bit on brads comments there are known issues with these engines having symptoms like yours and ending in catastrophic engine failure.

Here is the thread which has discussions on this topic: Golf 118 TSI Engine Failures: Resolved via Service Campaign 24S4

I suggest having a good read of this thread first and if your questions are not answered then post them up in the thread rather than creating a new one.

After you've read this thread and if you're still keen on keeping the twin charger, have a look here to see how another forum member is going about rebuilding his car following a catastrophic failure: Slow death of a 118TSI

There are a number of fundamental issues with how this car has been set up/tuned from the factory which have caused these engine problems. Most of these have been addressed with service campaigns.

This misfire is the part that would have me worried.

I guess the first part of diagnosis would be to fit new plugs if it's been a while. Try reading the plugs - esp #4 - it's hard with current fuels though. Take the financial hit and buy direct from VW spares as the partno has changed (make them double check against the VIN & keep receipts) & there have been cases in the UK where warranty on an engine rebuild has been knocked back because the aftermarket plugs were the incorrect heat range.

Get a compression test done while the plugs are out.

Use VCDS to pinpoint which cylinder has a misfire. Then move the coil pack & see if the misfire moves with it.
