Primarily to stop water entering the air intake, bye, bye engine, and to stop the fan corkscrewing through the radiator.

Even if you have no intention of fording deep stuff, even proper road causeways can be deeper than 200mm, so a couple of minutes with a tarp and some straps can be worthwhile.

And never scream though deep puddles. Its fun, but it causes all sorts of issues. Slow and steady.

    I also suggest:
Locate and extend the breathers on the transmission and the diffs.

Also, if you have the tubeless tyre repair kit, it is a good idea to practice on old tyre. I bought a kit from TJM, it is Bush Ranger product and since I never used one I went to practice on old tyre and also wanted to show my daughters how to use it. I found out that it might be a bit hard for some people to actually fix the tyre with it. Anyway at the end we made about 10 holes in the spare wheel from the Touareg ...(it's OK I'm going to get a new tyres tomorrow), re-inflated tyre and it holds the pressure

It is quicker than replacing flat tyre with the space saver tyre, especially in the Touareg where you have to inflate the space saver before you use it.

Make sure you watch the video before you practice.

Apologies if I missed it, but was there something to put under the jack if you have to change a tyre on the sand. I guess you could use the spade as a jack base though.

I couldn't find this Motortraders you spoke of, but the cheapest Typhoon I could find was $240. I ended up getting the Projecta Storm from Repco on special for $119. It looks to be the single cylinder version of the Typhoon. Tested it last night and I think it'll do the job fine. Only problem is it is quite large, so I don't think I'll be able to fit it in the tyre well. I will have a play around when I get a chance and see if I can squeeze it in somewhere.

    • silver/black cloth tape (very strong and handy for heaps of quick repairs, especially when camping and compact)
    • some hose/spare tube - not suggesting any particular size, but its amazing how many uses you can find for a bit of tubing
    • silicon sealant - may be handy
    • spare fuses (you probably have these somewhere else, but good to have if you haven't - a pack only costs a few $)
I've added a small roll of said tape and sealant. Thanks. Don't think I'll get tube, but fuses it a good idea and on the shopping list.

Good idea... on both needing one, and suggesting using the shovel if need be

there is a strap specifically to hold first aid kits, under the front passenger seat, which is where we have ours. I found the strap cleaning the car one day and wondered what it was for - looked it up in the manual, its a pretty handy place for it

Cool, thanks for that... so that'll leave another hole for me to fill with something else

bumping a really old thread here but i am thinking the may be something some has looked into but i read in the manual on my car about a compressor that fits in one of the voids in the spare tyre well, was this a factory option or an vw aftermarket bit not sure if the tig is the same as the golf but thought it more likely someone where may have tried.

In the UK and a few other countries I believe the Tig comes with the compressor and tyre sealant goo, but here in Aus we get the biscuit wheel only. Compressor is not an option even. I would guess that the compressor isn't that good anyway, so it's worth going for a decent aftermarket one. I used mine over the New Years break to pump up the tyres after going on a beach - worked a treat. Took about 15 minutes to get all 4 tyres up to pressure and I was on my way. Well worth getting!
