Primarily to stop water entering the air intake, bye, bye engine, and to stop the fan corkscrewing through the radiator.

Even if you have no intention of fording deep stuff, even proper road causeways can be deeper than 200mm, so a couple of minutes with a tarp and some straps can be worthwhile.

And never scream though deep puddles. Its fun, but it causes all sorts of issues. Slow and steady.

    I also suggest:
Locate and extend the breathers on the transmission and the diffs.

Also, if you have the tubeless tyre repair kit, it is a good idea to practice on old tyre. I bought a kit from TJM, it is Bush Ranger product and since I never used one I went to practice on old tyre and also wanted to show my daughters how to use it. I found out that it might be a bit hard for some people to actually fix the tyre with it. Anyway at the end we made about 10 holes in the spare wheel from the Touareg ...(it's OK I'm going to get a new tyres tomorrow), re-inflated tyre and it holds the pressure

It is quicker than replacing flat tyre with the space saver tyre, especially in the Touareg where you have to inflate the space saver before you use it.

Make sure you watch the video before you practice.
