    Useless cavities

Hi, was sitting in traffic looking up at the roof console (my12 132 tsi) and wondering what all the unused buttons were for, spanners etc - then saw the cavity that i've never found anything to fit in.

Has anybody found a use for it? Or the dashboard tray? I've tried sunnies, they dont fit the roof hole and iphone gets cooked in either hole.

I did read once, years ago what the buttons were for, but have never used them. Has anybody?

    Cheers
    Michael

One thing I did find out after going to Europe and driving toll roads in France is that the card slots are for toll cards. The dealer who sold me the car had no idea and thought you might stick some business cards in them I agree that the cavities look nice but most are not functional spaces eg the coin cavity under your right knee. Cheers

The coin cavity is for European coins which are intended for parking meters as well as toll roads (Italy and France in particular)

The sunglasses cavity in the roof will only just fit my Ray Ban aviators. All the other glasses I have are too big for it so I put them in the trays under the seat. The dealer told me the buttons are used in Europe. Cant remember what they were for though.

I put keys in the coin pocket.

The slit holes in the centre console are handy for putting parking tickets.

Are the buttons for the phone? Spanner to call for service and whatever the other one does?

Mind you, the numbers are useless in Australia.

There was a thread talking about it around here somewhere...

    Roof Console - Three-Button Module - Reprogram

After a bit of messing around, I was able to code both buttons on the center roof console for Information (little 'i' picture) and Service/Breakdown (spanner picture) to numbers of my choosing. I now have the breakdown/service button calling VW roadside assistance and the information button calling my VW dealer.

For those interested, under the Telephone module --> Adaption in VCDS there are four items at the bottom of the drop down list. Two for each button, one being a 'roaming' version. The Service/Breakdown coding requires 7 bytes which are entered as their raw numeric values. So for VW roadside I entered 18 00 63 71 81 00 00 (note padding with 0's for the last two bytes). The Information number requires 8 bytes, again pad with 0's for the extra bytes.

Stock numbers are nice and all, but how often would you use them?? (still nice to have I suppose).

Just be careful if you put in the phone number for your wife that you remember to delete it when you sell the car so she doesn't get random calls
