    Used 2010 Tiguan pricing (5N MY11 l03TDl Wagon 5dr DSG 7sp 4-Motion 2.O DT)

I'm new here so please bear with me if there is a thread that I haven't found that answers my questions...

I have been offered a used October 2010 Tiguan 5N MY11 103TDi with the 7sp DSG for somewhere around $Aus 28000. I am currently a friend of the owner. The car has done 24000Km, the low kilometers due to the owner being overseas for 6 months each year.

The owner, whilst not mechanically minded, is very fussy and the car seems to be in immaculate "as new" condition. Services are precisely up to date as are recall modifications.

I have fallen in love with this car! But, I have concerns about the lack of ongoing Warranty particularly in respect of the DSG 7 speed. I have read elsewhere that VW have increased the gearbox Warranty from 3 to 5 years but I can't find confirmation of this. I have also read that the DSG in the Tiguan is a much more substantial unit than that in the Golf

My dilemma is that I really like this car and I value my friendship with the owner however I have to be sensible and cover my concerns (?)

My question basically is at what price would this be a good buy? (for information the original 2010 on road cost was $41000)

    Cheers,

Don't look too far into the recall issues, they don't effect the 7 speed DSG Tiguan's, it's a wet clutch, don't ever see problems with them, also if your going to not buy a car because of 'recall/reliability' concerns then your best off sticking with whatever car you currently have, all cars have their problems... Toyota recalled over 800,000 vehicles due to spiders setting of their airbags (REALLY?), Mazda recalled the Mazda 6's because the regeneration system was causing fires, etc etc you get the point, sooner or later your gonna have problems with ANY car you purchase, don't beat around the bush and buy the car you LIKE not the car you bought because it was 'convenient'.

P.S: The Tiguan is a excellent car, especially compared to rivals e.g. Holden Captiva, Subaru (****aroo) Forester etc etc.

It sounds like you're too close to the deal to be able to objective.

Though it does appear to be a good used car if you know the full history and the owner has looked after it.

If I were you I would offer your friend $2,000 more than their best trade-in offer. That way it's a win for your friend and also you're probably going to save reasonable $ from purchasing a similar car from a dealer.

My guess is that this vehicle would be offered $22-24k as a trade-in (depending on whether the car yard was going to put it on their lot of wholesale it).

I think the $28,000 price is almost what a dealer would advertise it at - have a look at carsales for 103TDI's under 40,000km.

Even if VW has extended the warranty on the DSG to 5 years (I'm not 100% sure if this is retrospective) you're still probably going to hold the car outside this period given it's 4 years old now. So it's always going to be a risk.

Having said that the DQ500 DSG in the Tiguan has been very reliable with very few issues reported. There are a few issues in transporters (commercial vehicles) that have done 150,000km+ however this is almost what you'd expect for an automatic transmission.

Depending on what options the car has fitted I think this car would be a good buy around $25,000. You have to remember that later models have a number of features that would have been options in 2010 that are now standard kit (e.g. comfort pack).

Thanks for that and agree with your sentiments regarding recall. I have always purchased new cars in the past with the reassurance of a warranty but the disadvantage of "instant depreciation" If I can negotiate a fair price I will proceed.

That is certainly true and I am trying to redress the balance...!

Thank you for your detailed advice on pricing - it seems very logical. My friend is moving back to Europe permanently hence the reason for the sale. He is basically looking for the best private sale price within the constraints of convenience and timing.

I will probably make an offer and leave him to decide if the convenience of an early sale and the ability to use the car until he leaves in late February makes a price lower than his current expectations acceptable

    Thanks again

    Good luck.

It's a tricky situation dealing with friends. There's one low km 103TDI private sale on carsales advertised for $24k. I am guessing this is a bit above what the trade in price is for the car. Dealer prices start around $27k.

You also have to remember that there is an advertised price and then a price that the car actually sells for. These are rarely the same as everyone wants to feel they are getting a good deal.

I think your friend is being optimistic with his $28k price, however most people are before they find out the reality of the used car market.

I would give him a realistic offer and suggest that if he doesn't think it is reasonable to advertise the car and try to sell it for more. If you're in no hurry he can always use you as a fall-back if the time comes close.

Plus as you say he can use the car right up to time he departs which has to be worth something.

    103TDi

With such low Kms the car is not even run in. I have a 2011 with 75K on it now with leather, bi zenons, off road, comfort pack which was close to 50K new and I will be putting it for sale in March at around $26K. If you could get he car for 26/27 I think it would be a good deal, they have excellent fuel economy and I have not had one issue with mine, aside from getting used to the idiosyncratic gearbox. The gearbox is a delight to use BTW. Al my driving has been long distance highway. AAt 24,000 Km you wont have to change the tyres till 50/60,000. Go for it.

Um, I could be wrong here but I do not believe the 2010 Tig's had a DSG option? Might be worth checking what the gearbox really is DSG and not Tiptronic.

I believe September 2010 built onwards (MY11) came with 7sp DSG. But there were some 6sp slushbox Tigual Pacific edition during 2012/2013.

Mine is Oct10 built MY11 with DSG.
