I for one will would second this,
I got a flat on Sunday at Forster 3hrs north of Sydney. Not a single tyre place open on the weekend.
So had to travel back to Sydney on the space saver spare
Lets just say it was a long and embarrassing trip from Forster to Sydney sitting on the freeway doing a maximum of 80kph being overtaken by everything else on the road.
Maybe I should have put a "L" plate on the car and it would have at least given me a better excuse for only going 80kph.
I'm still puzzled why VW don't offer full size spares as a factory option in Australia. I have foregone the boot space for the added benefit of a full size spare and there's quite a few others that have done the same.
I could swap the space saver back in when I'm around the city but can fit everything I need in the boot so haven't bothered. Space saver sits in the shed for when I sell the car.

Why would you be puzzled? We have smooth as silk bitumen roads all over the Australia and almost no gravel roads. It's all city driving and the tyre shops are almost every 10km.
But, seriously I think that the VW Au is responsible for that. If they would request the full size spare the VAG would have to include it with the new vehicles.

Maybe the answer lies in the statistics and you would be surprised if it turns out that you are the minority. I did exactly the opposite, I got rid off the space saver wheel completely and bought an official VW tyre repair kit (with compressor and can of product). The whole kit fits in the right compartment area in the boot, behind the lights. That's because I NEED space for the pram and my golf clubs. And the bags when my family is travelling. And for many other things.
Or another answer is that local authorities are not regulating the spare wheel size for SUVs and let manufacturers use space savers while in Europe they say for SUVs you can only have full spare wheel. I am just guessing.
Or another answer is that VW is saving money, because Australia is far away from their factories plus the high labour cost here and if they would do the same they do in Europe, it would make their cars more expensive here and less people would buy them.
Or another... no, I stop now. Go and ask VW.

Thanks everyone for your replies.....
What I have done is put the new Pirelli P1 at the back and will use it as a spare when it comes to replacing the other tyres. I have already enquired about getting a full sized steel wheel.
It will be good insurance when the need comes to taking the Tig off road.

Keep an eye on parts for sale as some people will sell off stock wheels when they upgrade wheels.
