Tyre size increase ?

My Tiguan has now covered 41 000 km , and the 215/65 R16 Pirelli P6's have reached the wear indicators.

Because of pothole-ridden roads in SA I am contemplating going to 215/70 16's.

It will better the ride quality as well as give a little more rubber to protect against rim damage....

My car is the Track & Field version, so a slight increase in the aspect ratio will not look out of place , IMHO.

Hi. Yeah, I have been thinking about what tyres to go with when my current ser wear out. I also currently have 215/65x16's on but was also interested in a slightly wider tyre. I was thinking of going 225/65x16 which would keep me within the 4% variance on OEM tyre laws that we have here in Aus. I would not give as much extra tyre sidewall as what you are suggesting, but still better than OEM.

BTW, if you say SA people on here are probably going to be thinking "South Australia" as it's an Aussie based forum

Even this forum has plenty of them .....

Go the larger profile, you can change your speedo correction with VAGCOM. Also, I suspect using the winter tyre option in the MFD settings will be OK. Will have to chec the manual for that.

I'm all for going to a 70 series tyre when ours are due. Looking at similar to Cooper ATR or ST in 215/70x16. Not worried about the speedo difference as that can be corrected. In a LT (light truck) variant you will get a much stronger tyre than the 'passenger rated' tyres the cars are shipped with.

Having a quick look at the web - Cooper don't do the ATR in LT215/70x16 its still passenger construction and they don't do the ST in that size at all

BFGoodrich do the AT KM in LT in 215/70x16 which could be a good all round tyre for the Tig.

Depending on the size increase you might have to think about wheel offset as the tyre is pretty close to the suspension strut as it is. I think a 215/70 should be fine as its about 10mm increase in radius, but a width increase 225/65 might rub (if you can find a tyre in that size)

No worries. There's a few brands that would something to suit. I have used the BFG A/T in the past and they were very good too. There would no need to go to a more aggresive pattern than that. Mickey Thomson also do some good tyres... either the ATZ or FCII would be excellent as well, although the smallest they do is a 265/75x16. Maybe a bit large for the Tig.
