Don't have proof but when we bought the Multivan we were told by dealer only to use BP diesel in it and were even supplied a brochure recommending only BP from VW.
I know this is talked about in the TDI section, but wanted to sus out the petrol side of things. Reason being is that my bro just bought a Renault Scenic that has to run on premium fuel, for his wife. They were told never to use Caltex fuel as it is causes problems with the Renaults. In fact, the went so far to say that Caltex had specifically asked Renault and their dealers not to recommend using their fuel to customers. This sounds like a load of crap to me, like the rubbish that came out about Shell Optimax causing problems in bikes. But then there was the story about BP 98 being about 95! So I give up.
Any proof to any of this?

Sounds suspicious to me, 98RON is 98RON.
Isn't there some kind of checking on fuel quality anyway?
There is a really good thread comparing different brands of 98RON and members experiences...
but also 'allegedly' depending on where you are - they just on-sell to the other companies...
and I've also heard rumours that not all companies actually are making their own fuels these days!?!?!
Is all very confusing...
this thread though I did find interesting reading:

the only BP near me closed though - so since I haven't been as able to use BP have had to use Shell or Caltex.

I've posted elsewhere before on the fuels .....
however I use both BP Ultimate and Shell 98..... my bike does not like the Shell but the turbo cars seem to prefer it .....
I do not trust the servos around here as I'm convinced they mix their petrol to either get max bang for their buck or cover for when they run out of 98 ..... Using 3 tanks from the same place will each feel different .... therefore I've started using an additive to level the playing field .....

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
A close friend of mine works at BP. Yes they DO make fuel/s for other brands. Not sure about the difference in quality though. Sometimes they dye the unleaded a different colour for the different brands, but I believe that's all.
Maybe they take their own fuel afterwards and further "enhance" it ...?
How about I ask him and let you know.
BTW - yes it depends where you buy it from too. You can have the best fuel in the world stored in the worst storage. Who's fault is that? A mate always bought BP from his local servo - until his car started running VERY bad (when we were on a 4WD day in the bush of course). He went back and complained, showed them all his receipts as proof that he only bought from them, and they agreed to pay the rebuild cost of over $6000 on his 4WD after a bit of back and forth.
