I do want to buy the VW OEM electronics kits, but I was worried it did not come with the harness that goes to the socket. I will have to try and source an ADR towbar.

Do I remove the current cross bar that has the OEM mount points and replace with the ADR compliant?

Yeah, throw the one away that's on there.

It's not very substantial. I wouldn't hang a bike carrier off it.

They're not too bad from a DIY sense. You have to strip a fair bit off the rear of the car, though. The CAN wiring up under the dash is a pain in the backside as well.

When you say pain in the back side, are you refering the Y peice that needs to be installed near the OBD port?

Not a Tiguan - but i am currently removing a genuine VW (made by BestBar) towbar from a 2010 VW Golf. Im sure it's similar to the Tiguan.

The towbar replaces your OEM rear crash beam - so your OEM crash beam is no longer used.

As for the wiring, there are 2 parts:

    - a wiring loom thats approx 1.2m in length with a black plug (this is the part that plugs into a module on the passenger side and runs down to the towbar to power the lights on the trailer)
    - a wiring loom thats approx 4m in length with a red plug (and separate earth lead) at one end, and about 8 or so wires at the other end. The end with the red plug and earth plugs into the module in the passenger boot (unclip OEM red plug and plug in aftermarket red plug). The other end runs up to the drivers side dash. 3 red wires and a blue wire go into the fuse panel (and replace existing pins in this fuse panel) and the remainder of the wires go into the CECM (central electronics control module) which is also under the dash.

    Thanks Lucas.

I think my Tiguan already has the RED plug pre-wired as I took all the passenger side panel out last night and it was sitting there.

I did not find the BLACK plug though, so I hope the VW OEM electronics kit comes with that loom.

The Tiguan in question is pre-wired

The Y-piece doesn't come in the wiring kit.

Most of the time, techs will lop the connector off, and splice it in. Trouble is, there isn't enough length in the wires to do it easily.

Yes the can bus is a bugger.. 3 plugs that need to be made into one. Chop and join is the way but not much room as stated above. I have made up a harness so you can plug them in but it costs $40 to make. Easy and less time but expensive....VDUB...

    Thanks guys.

The part I still have not been confirmed from the supplier is the loom that goes from the socket at the bumper, to the control module. It does not seem to be included.

You need to buy a full wiring kit as per a non-wired car for the bits you need.
