I've faffed about with "hanging" bike racks for years (eg: like the one above). A trip last year where despite my best efforts I scratched the bejeesus out of my daughters 1-day old $600 bike & my "don't tell my wife what i paid for it" Salsa El Kaboing convinced me to buy a 4 bike wheel mount channel rack. Best thing I ever did. The image is a 3 bike rack but the concept is the same.

If I was doing it again I'd get similar but without all the straps (Thule do one & there are others)

The receptor on his towbar points to the ground and needs a right angle piece for the towball. He wants a bike rack that is similar

    Right

I'm not aware of any that don't mount to an Australian style towball & gooseneck. The Euro style "all-in-one" towballs usually need an adaptor. You could probably get a towbar company to fabricate something but then you have to insert, lift & hold the whole bike rack while trying to get the pin in.

Unfortunately no, you are limited to towball mounted bike racks.

When deciding on which bike rack to buy, ask yourself how many and what type of bike you intend to carry, as well as how often and where you will be transport the bike(s) to.

So you can't legally use something like this?

I'm in the same boat as OP. I kept by Thule rack from my previous car and I'd prefer to keep using it instead of investing in a brand new rack.

Nothing can stop you from using a non ADR compliant towing accessory, but should anything go wrong (say the rack and bike fall off and damage another car) , the insurance company can knock back claim easily as it is not ADR compliant.

Looks like I'm just going to have to put the towball back on and use a bike rack attached to that. It would have been great to find something that can use the vertical hitch though - less parts attached to each other should be more reliable and stronger...

Much as I'd agree with you, and companies like Gripsport might be able to do a custom job that'd fit the Tiguan, I'd tend to suggest that its not that clever an idea. Reason being that with a 2" hitch (horizontal mount, say, Hayman Reese style) you'll at least be able to support part of it in the hitch when mounting it to your car. Same goes with a tongue mount (at least to a point).
Trying to hold the bike rack up whilst you're halfway under it attempting to engage the thread or secure the locking pin, not to mention trying to align it into the vertical hitch mount is not my idea of fun. Of course, not such an issue when you only need to engage the (much lighter, and smaller) tongue.

Plus 1 for gripsport, give them a call and see what they say or drop around and see them.
Might be able to manufacture a right angle adapter for it, other wise you could look at a qr adapter from gripsport. Or do you have one of the fallic mini style tow bars?
    Al..
Edit: or change to a hayman reese set up and sell the factory one to recover funds.

Install a hitch (for bike rack attachment only) to Tig

Hi gents, is there anyone know where to buy this hitch for a 2011 tig? I know it's available from ebay but wondering if possible to get one from local source?

I don't know if A it would be legal outside of NA (they have totally different load capabilities for the Tiguan of 2000 lb instead of our 2000 Kgs) AND B I don't know if models outside of NA have the threaded hole fittings in the bumper for them (here they remove the entire rear bumper and replace it with a stronger unit which links right into the rear subframe). Here in NZ you wouldn't get a WOF with one as they're not approved for our Tiguan.

    Cheers
