Timing belt and water pump replacement

I had no luck searching.
Our Tig is almost due for its 105,000km service.
I believe this is water pump and timing belt. What sort of cost do dealers normall charge?

Is the whole thing really necessary, ie both pump and belt.
I was thinking of having the belt done, but not disturb the water pump.

What have others done?

Do the whole lot in one go. Belt, pulleys, pump and coolant.

Its not cheap. I think the last one I did came in at around $1200. Of the top of my head, there's 5 pulleys all up to do. The water pump was actually the cheapest part.

Dealer labour rate is nearly double mine. The job takes about 4-5 hours to do, and parts prices are similar. So work out the difference from that.

I'm just almost at 100K too... But got an 'entire new engine' 2 1/2 years ago, at 60K... Might have to call the repairing dealership to inquire if that new engine included those components. I would guess belts included in the replacement, water pump not... ?

Yeah, best to check.

Replacement engines have always turned up in various states of completion, in my experience.

Never half-arse a timing component replacement job. yeah,you might think it's expensive to do the lot now,but you won't have to touch it for another 100k km after it's done,and if you leave the pump and it fails in 6mths/1yr from now,you'll be replacing the lot again prematurely as the belt will likely be damaged by the leaking coolant.

The poor man pays twice after all...

I had my water pump fail at 100,926 km. It was still under warranty at the time and the dealer replaced the belt and all else required. I had just driven back to BrisVegas from Mt. Gambier the night before it leaked. The service manager said I was the luckiest bloke he had met. The car is still going great guns. My advice is to change everything required and not have the worry going forward.

I had the whole thing done for $!474 which also included a throttle body assembly at $333 (Cost Price) The timing kit included timing belt, front pulley & tensioner pullies. the water pump was not touched however included was fresh coolant & drive belt. 5hrs labour required. Tiggy TDI has now done 118kkms with no probs.Hope this helps.

I have had quoted:
120,000 service $600 inc Haldex
Timing belt and water pump $1050 (mine is diesel)
Front Pads and rotors $650
Total $2590

The wisdom is the water pump does not require replacement, but as its cheap ($100?) do it anyway whilst you are in there.

Tyres, rear shocks and lower control arm bushes are also due soonish, which pushes the bill to about $4000. As the trade in value is about $15k, then this is about 30% of the car's value, which does make me think carefully about when is the ideal time to turn it over.
