    No ... that's normal and is part of the design quirks (like bonnet lever on passenger side).

    Also the fact that the heater symbol is not in the right spot based on when you turn it on.

    Ah, OK thanks - never had to use the heater (below 10Degrees is considered a cold-snap up here)
    Strange how VW makes most other things so well, then throws in the odd crappy bit like that (another quirk as you say).

    good idea - sounds like stuff Dad used to use (aircraft mechanic) called "Dri-Lube". I think he might have a stick of it lying around at home so might give it a go.
