    Tiguan TDI ProVent 200 Installation Advice

    Right. I read from a number of posts that it's impt to install one of these in especially in a diesel. So I got myself one because I want to keep my car is good shape and I do a bit of start stops for work.

    Received my kit from Western Filters via eBay today.



    Read through the instructions...



    But with those technical names (because I'm such an idiot when it comes to such things?, I cldnt really understand it... Well, I'm also afraid to mess the engine more than helping it! especially the part on the oil return. (got the extra 'check valve' thing...)

    No luck w YouTube too.... But saw a few photos on a Jetta TDI on this forum and a Nissan XTrail somewhere.

    Does anyone who owns a Tiguan TDI (mine's 2010/2011 model) w a ProVent installed, could maybe help me w some photos of your kit installed and where all the lines go? I'm a picture/video type person!

    Or Shd I just pay someone to do it?? Lol

    Any tips and help appreciated! Thanks!!

    It's really not that difficult - the biggest issue is making it fit in the engine bay - there is a thread on one fitted to a Gold tdi which should be similar and quite tight. There is also some good information on the Australian Xtrail forum under T31 diesel oil on airfilter thread. If you don't feel comfortable, I would take it to a VW non-dealer service specialist - the labour should be under a couple of hours provided the mounting of the housing itself is sorted.

    If you look up the Provent on my site, i have added several links to some great installs I have found over the years on the web. You can't easily do an oil return to the sump, nor do I recommend it unless you are going to be really strict on early oil changes, as diesel fuel does build up in the sump and dilute the oil over time, and recycling the Provent collections like I do *could* lead to a faster dilution. I do it, but I change my oil before or spot on every 7500kms.

    I return mine through the 42DD oil pressure relocation block that I sell, and this then drains back in through the stock oil pressure switch port on engine shutdown. Very clean, but as mentioned, not a set and forget item in my opinion - and it is all just my opinion, nothing proven. A few guys run this setup now though, and I must say my system is nice and clean.

    Run the drain hose right down to below the car and put a $4 sprinkler tap in the end. drain every few thou, I only see about 100-200mL every other month when I was draining it, but doing lots of kms.

    Thanks guys. I'll have a look at the suggested sites. I've been onto urs before Greg. Just wondering, is the ProVent the same thing as the 42DD, as in they are both catch cans doin the same job? What's the difference between the two? So the installation is similar too?

    There is a lot of space on the engine firewall, just behind the battery, that's probably the best location for it. If you already have a bracket, it shouldn't take longer than 1 hour to install it.

    can someone explain to me what this thing does? and why you would want one? and if its so important, why doesnt it come as standard?

    I haven't got a bracket. What kinda bracket and I look out for, Transporter? Can I get it from Bunnings?
    Hippyhippy , these guys (Transporter and Greg) are prbly amongst the more knowledgeable ones for these things. Have a read at Greg website at www.carformance.com.au. But I'm still a noob when it comes talking abt engines.

    Well, you have to make your own bracket to hold the provent and bolt it where you want it to be. Unles someone already installed the Provent in Tiguan, in which case you could copy his bracket or ask him if he could make the bracket for you and post it to you.

    The 42DD ones have a permanent series of metal sieves inside, so they never need servicing. The downside is they are not as efficient as the internal filter element Provent, but still lightyears ahead of anyone else's empty can. Fine for a petrol car, but a bit less than ideal for a diesel with it's greater blowby. I still sell them to diesel guys who don't want to worry about replacing elements, but always recommend the Provent for diesels.

    ...also, I found that washing the Provent's element in the quality brake cleaner and re-using it is possible. I still have the original element in my T5 after washing it every 7,500km.
