i'll be driving the tig to the snow too .. but ill probably just hire some chains from the servo, even though its not required for 4wd's .. probably wont need it but just in case.
Ok, so the tig will see its first winter this season. Would like to hear what sort of chains others have used for the Tig. Konig site seems to recommend 4WD specific chains for the Tig, but I was hoping to be able to use a suitable sized chain from their more affordable regular range (T2 range for example).

In VIC all cars inc 4wd have to carry chains. lucky nsw'ers (but I think the rule has changed recently also)!
I'm on snow around 20 days a year so will def need some chains.

yeah ive been to falls creek and hotham ... the roads there are definitely much more dangerous than NSW.
Yippeee! I'm heading up to Mt Buller this Saturday in tiggy! Only early days yet with a snow depth of 30cm. From memory, last year only required on 4WD/AWD if overnighting. Mt Bullers website is even stating that no chains required for even 2WD at this point, so i guess they review the requirements as conditions change.

I've also been looking into chains for my tig as well and unfortunately options seem to be limited and expensive. (at least for a 147 running the standard 17" wheels)
The manual says not to fit chains to the wheel unless you are running a certain size wheel/tyre combo, can't remember off the top of my head but it is basically a winter tyre combo, hence not standard in Aus. According to my VW dealer, the issue is the limited clearance between the inside tyre wall and the bottom of the wheel strut - they recommended going to a wheel chain specialist to see what they say as I was apparently the first person to ever ask about wheel chains.
The wheel chain people had a look and agreed with the limited clearance issue.
They said that the T2's may fit, but they couldn't be 100% sure without ordering in the chains and doing a test fit - The T2's were about $330
The K-Summits will defiantly fit as they are designed for this exact issue – the K-Summits are $550
I also asked about the K7’s, as they are a 7mm chain and would fit, but unfortunately Konig don’t make them in the required size for the Tig.
So unless someone is willing to roll the dice on a set of T2’s to see if they fit I will be swinging towards the K-Summits. Expensive yes, but cheaper than replacing damaged suspension because the chains were too chunky.
Hope this helps!
There was a discussion on this about this time last year in the forums as there are some really good overseas options for these wheels, but i'm not sure that they are available and/or approved for use in AUS. We've got the 18" rims on our Tig so will have the same problem, and the Golf R has 19"s on it, so it won't be going anywhere near the snow!
thanks for the input Fudggie. Had a chat with the local wheel chain guys and they also recommended the K-Summit to avoid that clearance issue. $550 here vs $400 delivered from the states.... hmm
