I just did a *really* quick and dirty quote on RACV, agreed value of $36k, 34y/o male in Vermont 3133 and it came in at $1,160.53
(knowing of course a different suburb will likely make lots of difference).
In NSW NRMA used to be one of the higher priced option, but of late they have changed the way they do things and are far more competitive... was wondering if the rough equivalent in VIC is doing the same...
That said I know SFA about RACV or what they are like as a company.

I'm with Shannon's who will insure tuned/modified vehicles (not all insurers like mods).
It's about $1200 a year with agreed value of $36k on a 2011 125TSI + the bits.
My personal experience from the past and what I have heard also about Shannons in terms of customer service and payment of claims is very good, compared to not very favorable for AAMI. Though most people don't read their insurance contract until they go to make a claim and then find out what is and is not included....
Not saying that AAMI is necessarily bad, however there appears to be some restrictions in terms of choice of repairer, using non-geniune/used parts etc. Usual story is that you get what you pay for and if you shop around and do your research you can save some money and/or heartache down the track.

AAMI policy states you can use your choice of repairer and will use oem parts, no discount even though I have a policy with them already.
Excess is $625 including windscreen damage and rental car at no cost.
mine is around $650 a year for the Tiguan, NRMA with $42k agreed value (including all mods as long as roadworthy), $800 excess. no windscreen, no hire car.
postcode is a quite significant factor, i paid more insurance for my cars when i was in Sydney than now in Brisbane.
