Tiguan engine bay plastic lower guards

Firstly apologies if this has been raised before , but a search revealed nothing.
The plastic panels / guards (2) that are attached under the engine / transmission area of the Tdi Tiguan, are they necessary or can they be left off. Did oil change so panels had to come off and I thought ventilating airflow is maybe enhanced when stationary if not installed.

    Any thoughts. Thanks, Alan.

    Hi towbar
I have a Tdi Tiguan as well and my personal feeling is that if the plastic panels didnt serve some sort of purpose,VW certainly wouldnt spend the money fitting them to the vehicle. For my own peace of mind I would be refitting them as they do deflect sand/small rocks etc that seem to be prevalent on most of our crappy W.a. roads.

Ok thanks for the responses. Have re-installed the guards.
Yes Phil agree with the state of WA roads especially outside the Metro area.
