Tiguan connecting accersories direct to battery

Hello All

I am intending to fit a brake controller for towing to my 2010 Tig. The manufacturer of the controller states that the + / - should be connected direct to the battery terminals this I understand. VW have told me that I cannot do this ?? If I do then the car will know that extra powe is being drawn from the battery and will cause a fault.

Can anyone confirm if they have fitted a brake controller this way without any problems.
Or any other accessory for that matter I am sure that there are a lot of guys who would connect power to large amplifiers etc. that would connect this way.

I wired my retrofitted front fog lights direct to the battery, switched with a relay off the rear foglight switch and never had an issue. That's to a 2008. I find it a bit hard to believe that the Tig would know the "total" draw from the battery at any one time as there are a number of circuits that are not load monitored as far as I know. That said I'm no auto-electrician !!!

Well, whoever told you that, he was wrong. It would be wiser to say that all the wiring needs to be done according to manufacturer's requirements. Especially the wirings for the mobile phones and the 2 way radios.

The direct battery connections can be done as long as you connect the fuses there as they should be.

Let me say here that you should NEVER use a fuse in a brake controller circuit.

Why??? If it blows the controller wont work.

It should have an AUTO RESETTING CIRCUIT BREAKER in the + line so that if it trips it will reset and still give you brakes, Maybe intermittently but brakes never the less A common error which could conceivably kill you.

All other accessories should have individual fuses as close to the battery as possible.

A bus bar box is a good idea with individually fused circuits.

Im not a sparky but have put all the extra wiring in a Landcruiser.

Extra battery and isolator, Anderson plugs and 6 gauge wiring for van batteries, EGT, Auto temp gauge, Low water alarm, Digital engine temp gauge, RVC with dual power supply RVC on caravan.

Dont know about the Tig but was told not to connect to battery in the Passat Bluemotion. Also told dont stuff battery as they are about $800

From looking at some vehicles on my travels its not really obvious as lots had fuses when the instructions say an auto reset breaker.


Always some one either doesn't read instructions or "knows better"

Isn't illegal to do low voltage car work yourself but you do need to know what you are doing.

Decided to do my own after a "professional" did a stuff up. LOL

Of course not. It only when something goes wrong, you're responsible for it.

Yep very true but after more than 50,000km of vanning it never even blew a fuse so I guess I may have done it right.

It was meant in general. I saw a lot over the years and not just the electrical.
