I'm having the same problem with our Tig, takes about 15mins to get cold. Had the local Auto Elec look at it and he reckons the compressor is shagged and needs all the stuff GTD_XU1 has had replaced. He has had a couple of Tigs, a Passat and some Golfs through for the same thing since the weather started warming up.

Unfortunately ours is 5 months out of warranty so unless VW Australia can be convinced that they should cover the cost we are up for the full cost... There goes the Xmas fund

Had the VW dealer have a look at the aircon and decide how they are going to proceed. They said they found a TPI 2029389/3 that deals with the problem and changed some parts plus gave the air con a software upgrade. Seems to have made the air con work again, but they did say to keep an eye on it and let them know if it fails again. I tried a google search to see what exactly changed, but come up empty. I'd be interested to know why it suddenly stopped working and what the software upgrade did, but as long as it keeps blowing cold air I am happy. Best of all it was free, which is my kind of price range

I'll be doing a 1000km round trip in a few weeks, so that should be a good enough test to see if there are any further issues.

    I had the same problem.

    Just out of warranty.

VW fixed the compressor under "customer good will".

    Cheers

I picked it up at the end of the day, so the guy behind the counter couldn't tell me and the mechanic had gone home. It can't have been too hard to replace as they only had it for a day and most of the AC stuff is buried deep in the engine bay.

I'm still clueless as to why the AC stopped working after 3 years to the point that the auto elec said the compressor was stuffed as it it wouldn't pressurise the system, yet a "software update" at the dealer makes it work again.

Anyway, it has been working fine for the past week or so.

Good to know, just in case it stops working again. Although that may be in another 3 years and 6 months when the AC software craps out again

Well we didn't have to wait 3.5 years for it to fail again, just 1 month I hope they actually fix it this time...

My Son took his Tig in yesterday to sort out the A/c - and YES it is the compressor - Was given a quote of $2300 to fix (6 hrs of labour) .
The Service tech rang up VW to see if they would come to the party . And Yes they will Pay for all the parts and half the Labour . So should cost him about $350 now. They Obviously have had a major problem with that batch of compressors to be replacing them on vehicles out of warrantee without much of a fight. Apparently they have to take the whole front end of the car off to Access - hence the large number of hours !!.

George II - did the compressor stop working altogether or was it that the AC wasn't blowing enough cold or very little cold air? Additionally did the air conditioning smell like really bad foot odour? I'm having problems with our Tig 2009, little to no cold air and bad foot odour smell.
