I know engines use some oil, but there is a big difference between using half a litre over 15,000klms versus emptying a sump of 5 litres in 10,000klms

My RB26 uses little to no oil and it cops 9500rpm with 25psi of boost up it. It may put half a litre in the catch can after 10,000klms but thats about it. If it used the whole sump i would be pulling it out to find the problem.

Well, whether it's by fault or design, it has become quite apparent that VW/Audi ownership may or may not entail oil consumption rates higher than what many motorists are used to.

Volkswagen states the engine may use up to 0.5 l per 1 000 km (though some would argue that's a bit of a cop-out, just so they can avoid excessive numbers of warranty claims).

Oil consumption rates higher than that (after the break-in period) may warrant a visit to the dealer, though I'm not sure how accommodating head office would be in regards to goodwill repairs if the vehicle warranty has expired.

At least the dealers provide free top-ups.

In any case, I'm afraid it's just another hassle that many (but not all) VW/Audi owners just have to put up with - whether it's worth the hassle is up to the individual.

According to many on these forums, you just rock up and *most* dealers are willing to oblige.

I have never been offered free top ups. When my engine was running low on the run in oil they told me to buy some of the normal oil and simply top it up.....

Free top ups actually admits liability if you ask me.

I reckon it costs them a whole lot less just to top up your oil than if they were to book it in and run it through their system as a job etc, etc.

The dealers probably have "excess" oil anyway as they likely bill out more than they actually use, so in the end it's just swings and round-abouts.

If they want to keep you happy they'll just top your oil up and send you on your way.

The other way of dealing with it is a lot more hassle which I am sure most dealers will try and avoid doing consumption tests etc, etc.

It's not out of the question, although dealers can sometimes get their info mixed up as well.

The initial-fill could be different in some specific way, but I'm guessing not too dissimilar to VW approved oil that you can buy off the shelves.

And whatever it is, I'm also guessing that it's probably synthetic, rather than mineral (in case someone was wondering).

...and he is most likely right.
Some also say that it's a special running in oil, I'm hearing that for more than 10 years now and during the last 10 years I've always drained that first oil in the first 1500km refilled with a new approved oil and never had to top up the oil between the oil changes.

So, what ever they use as the running in oil, I don't care, because it doesn't stay there for a long time.
