OK next upgrade is on its way - have some new red (go faster) coil packs getting shipped out from ECS Tuning. Hopefully these will last a bit better than the stock Tig ones.

The ones I got were ones recommended by ECS for the GTI/R - Home Page > Search > 06E898001 > ES#2065380 Ignition Coil - Set Of Four - 06E898001.
The R8 coil packs are slightly different part number - Audi R8 V8 4.2L > Engine > Ignition > ES#2538571 Ignition Coil - Set Of Eight - 06E905115EKT8
But after a little further investigation this part looks like it may fit also. I just couldn't be 100% that the coil-packs for the V8 would fit the 4 cylinder engine so I went the safe option.

I've had my R8 coil packs in for a couple of weeks now - only just got around to loading up a photo.
Very easy install - 5 minutes to change over the coil packs.
Pull the old ones out using a "special" tool comprising 2 x zip ties looped.
Definitely 5kW advantage from the red colour on the top![]()

Interested to see how you find the coil packs.
I might source a set and get them put on when the car goes in for its next service.
In terms of performance there is no noticeable difference - though they do have an aesthetic appeal.
I put them in as a bit of insurance after I had a failure of a stock coil pack. Car was off the road for 3 days while I got it replaced.
After a bit of further investigation I found out it's not an uncommon failure in tuned VW's. The solution that a number of others have implemented is to put in the higher rated coil packs out of the performance audis as they are identical size/shape to "stock" VW ones.
They do look good (under the engine cover) but for me it was to make sure my car stayed on the road. Plus I'd hate for a coil pack to go while I was on a country trip. I now carry my "stock" set in the boot - just in case.
Installation is very easy:
- Remove engine cover (pops off),
- Unplug connector/harness
- Pull coil packs (you can get a special tool but a couple of zip ties works just as well)
- Install new coil packs
- Reinstall wiring harness and engine cover
Set of 4 can be done in 5 minutes

Yes I am hoping that it will improve things to the point where I don't feel the need to drive in manual mode.
I have found that since tuning the car this has tended to highlight the less than favourable gear selection that the DSG makes from time to time. The key thing for me is kicking down a gear or two when in "D" and you stick your boot in - particularly when you need to get moving in a hurry.
Personally I'd prefer to be in the right gear rather than operating efficiently when I am pulling out into traffic and need to get up to speed.
So we'll see if the DSG tune is all it's cracked up to be. Hopefully it makes the DSG a while lot more driveable.
Will keep you all posted.
