Just read this thread from start to finish Thanks team_v for regularly updating it.

I think the news has convinced me to spec up a Tiggy rather than a Golf R, which was my original plan. My current ride is a BMW 125i coupe which loses grip even at pedestrian speeds if so much as 1 drop of water hits the road. I'm also tired of the lack of rear doors and the inflexible boot space.

I drove the Tiggy at the VW drive day late last year - think I was at the last one in Sydney. Was impressed by how it went!

One question: would you recommend getting the RNS510 factory-fitted, or doing it yourself? Was there any trickery involved in getting it to play nice with the steering wheel controls? I figure that had a higher chance of working than the Zenec (as good as you make it sound)

I wouldn't get the RNS factory fitted unless you need it for one of the options (reverse camera/park assist etc)
You can save yourself $1500 if you purchase one on ebay and all it takes is a few vagcom code changes and it works just as a factory one would.

Hopefully you can get a spec'd up Tiguan and benjoy driving enthusiastically again.

thanks for clearing that up i'll probably get both reverse camera and park assist so will probably do things the boring way. i've torn cars apart before, but i figure this time the saving comes from getting the 125 rather than the (for my purposes, identical) 147.

out of curiosity, can anyone with the right equipment do the vagcom code changes (e.g. with diy kits) or must it be done by the dealer?

still can't believe i'm seriously considering an SUV

Anyone with a compatible vagcom can do the changes.
I got the guys at Harding Performance to do mine when they upgraded the car to stage 1.

If you are getting the reverse camera and parking sensors it is probably easier to get the whole package from factory.

It isn't really a normal SUV.
It behaves like a large hatch, not very mutch body roll (can be dialed out with sway bars and springs) and it still gives you enough room to transport 4 people and a lawnmower without sacrificing people's limbs for space.

I am fine, haven't even had to take the blue beast through any water at all.
Hoping Sharkie is okay i think he is around the Carseldine area.

Thanks Dave, haven't heard from you in a while.
Trying to get a hold of Sharkie to see if he is okay.

Thankfully we had a bit of time to prepare, hopefully this is remembered when people decide to rebuild.

I'm good guys, thanks. In the CBD my carpark is high, so no issues there and at home, I'm on a hill so no flooding close either ....

Spent half the day in the CBD, had a few minutes to walk down to the Riverfront and have a look and the river is awesome and terrible all at the same time ..... spent the rest of the day at the bank's DR site outside the city and the number of detours you have to take around flooded streets are shocking ....

Worst of it all was, that it was nice and sunny all day in the city.

Went for a drive down the Gold Coast today as the City was down and out with flooding and no power.

3 people, beach gear and aircon on managed 8.2l/100km on teh highway with a fair amount of traffic = reasonable amount of speed changes.

Also came home the scenic way (covering 3/4 of the planned March Tiguan cruise and it is a prety decent drive.
Considering going back down for another look later this month to see if there are any other routes that could be more fun.

Crossed a cuaseway with water flowing over it (first "softroading" event - very minor water flows, only 10cm or so) and also ticked over 5000km on the way home.
