I test drove the auto TDI and felt it was a little too eager to change up. So I went with the manual and, for the most part, am happy with the choice.

But I have to agree with the general sentiment on the combo of electronic handbrake and manual transmission. I stall it all the time, but am starting to get used to it. And what's with reverse gear being right next to 1st?! Annoying!! In other 6 speed transmissions I've driven, reverse was always way over next to 6th gear. I've lost count of the times I've gone to drive off only to discover I've put a little too much pressure on the stick and accidently left it in reverse. Very embarassing (and yes, I'm not a great driver).

I also don't like how the multi-function display doesn't indicate what gear you've selected until after you release the clutch. Would be nice to see on the screen what slot the lever is in before you engage the clutch, for the numerous times I forget what gear I'm in (again, I'm not a great driver!).

Hmmm, prob should've bought the auto.....

Our Tig is my wife's company car mostly. On weekends off, I tend to drive it more. She test drove the TDI in both and definately the auto came out on top. I would rate my wife as an excellent driver in both auto and manual - better than most blokes I know, so left it all completley up to her to pick. 15,000kms down the track, she is still very happy with the choice.

The Tig is my wife's choice through and through, even though I use it for the commute to work, and she's a manual driver. Everytime she's tried an auto she's got out the car saying she can't make the change drivings just not as much fun.
Keeps me happy I can't get on with autos either.
DSG might be a different proposition, but I haven't driven one. Willing to keep an open mind though
