guy I know whose family have both an auto and manual TDI Tig, say he reckons the manual is a much better marriage with the diesel.
That aside, fair enough re above, noting though that it cost you about $2000 more, uses about 10% more fuel and saps about 10% of the cars get up and go (just look at accleration figs). Not small downsides IMO.
Autos have their advantages, but they also have a lot of disadvantages. Buyers hopefully consider both in the context of their circumstances.
I am not talking here of any DSG option - if now available.

From what I know the auto Tig is only 0.2s slower to 100km/h. But not everyone can shift the gears quickly, so I can dismiss 0.2s
Yes you're right, the auto uses more than 10% of fuel than manual - actually more than 20% (city driving).
Hmm… $2000 more for auto; if you keep the car 10years it is only $200 per year and also you get more for it when you sell it or trade it in, so it is not a big deal.
But honestly, if it was only me driving the Tig I would lean towards the manual for the long term reliability and better fuel economy.

hi all
I drove both, auto and man
imho the auto was just so so easy to drive, a nice seating position and just turn the key and drive. Such a relaxed position.
I get my tig next week so the tdi auto will take some getting used to i think.

Would have to say I still get 6.6l/100k on a trip form the auto (can't complain about that on NZs hilly, winding roads) and the only gearbox maintenance issues I've seen World wide (aside from the odd warranty type glitch) are relating to the manual box not the auto. There are quite a number of manuals with "issues" now particularly in GB and Europe with gearbox changes and even "swaps" for autos !! Could be a different story given time of course but the fact that most truck fleets use autos now to "minimise" maintenance would make you wonder.
Cheers

That's really good! I also always get outstanding fuel economy figures from my vehicles.
I was driving our Touareg yesterday from home through the city, there was still a bit of morning traffic remaining and a lot of road works and I saw avrg. 8.3L/100km on the display for long time and it was 8.8L/100km when I arrived there. Don’t get me wrong I don’t need the manual gearbox so I can say I’m the man I want to feel that I’m driving that car and so on. Besides, the Tig will be my wife's car to drive to work and for shopping.

my call based on fact that the 147 tsi with auto, has same accel figs as the 125 manual even though it has 20% more power than the 125 and peak Torque available across a wider rev range.
I haven't looked at other offical figs for a while, but based on above, I'm standing by my 10% slower, for all it matters.
While I suggest people should way up the pro's and cons, most people I think pick auto vs manual based on overall pref/driving situation and thats fine.

I think with The Tig, auto is good enough, since it has tiptronic and "S" mode
problem is most people these days don't really know how to drive a manual. For example, I can't believe the number of people (women in particualr though) that think it's OK to sit at an intersection riding the clutch. It just shows a complete ignorance of the system. Not that I blame them. So autos are always going to show up with less issues these days.
As for my preference with a TDI, definitley the auto. It works beautifully and picks the right gear for the right situation pretty much every time.
