Yep. Thats it. If you fail a climb, ie sitting there all wheels spinning not going anywhere. The safest thing to do is put your foot on the brake and stall the car. With the car stalled keep your foot on the brake and put in reverse. Take both feet off the pedals and ensure the steering wheel is straight, the engine compression will hold the car in position. Start the car with the key and reverse down using engine compression to control the speed.
Generally braking on steep descents going backwards just locks the wheels, but can be useful if you pump the brake pedal like manual ABS.
Obviously only works with a manual. And doesn't work at all in Tig.

Basic off road driving technique 101. Give it a try, you'll be amazed how well it works - and it could save you a lot of grief if you get halfway up a hill and decide you can't go any further. If you do any sort of off road or advanced driver training they will get you to do it I'm sure.

Yeah but whats the title of this thread
Autos will stall in certain situations, but whats more likely is the oil overheats and you lose drive.
With a manual you always have a direct connection between the engine and the wheels and are not relying on the viscousity of a liquid to propel you forward.
Autos are easier to drive off road, but most expedition 4WDs are manual because they'll get you further and can cope with more abuse.
Mind you thats waaaaaaay beyond the scope of the Tig.
But at the end of the day manuals still rule

While you're not likely to stall on a hill with an auto, you might get into a spot where you're half way up a really steep section and decide it's too much to go on. The car might even be slipping as you're sitting there with the brakes on deciding what to do. You've stopped, so you can't move forward again, you can't turn around, what to do? Your auto in reverse is going to run out of control if you don't use brakes - even if you've got hill decent it's going to use the brakes to try and slow you, but you're still reversing with reduced control as it struggles to control the slide as it brakes to try and slow the decent. Try it, set both up, a manual with or without hill decent, and an auto with hill decent.
I used to train people in remote communities how to drive in off road conditions. We used to set up this exact scenario with different vehicles, including autos. By far the easiest and safetest was the manuals when put in this situation (and a few others too). It's such a simple technique and is astonishlying effective.
NZ, the good thing is that you've got hill decent, becasue an auto FWD without this is next to usless IMHO.

Good tips guys on hill decents in reverse in a 4wd, but aren't we all debating over nothing as the Tig wont start with no clutch engaged, so isn't the above technique useless for a Tig anyway (manual or auto)?
Just a word of caution for these who drive manual that when you operate the clutch pedal think about the DMF (dual mass flywheel), since it could have very short lifespan (between 50,000-100,000km) if you don't use the clutch pedal properly (and not just the clutch).
I didn't road tested Tig yet, but I was told by many people that the TDI and A/T is a better match than manual gearbox.
Also the one has to think about where you will drive it most of the time, if the Tig will spend most of the driving in the city traffic the A/T is probably better option.
The Tiguan off road abilities are limited, so for most of the light duty off-roading the A/T will be a better option for most of the people. The last thing you want is the engine stalling and the car sliding backwards and sideways on muddy track, rolling on its side. (I'm not talking about you the experienced 4wdrivers.)
