Here is an extract from this site http://mobilechiptune.co.uk/html/faq.html
"What is remapping?
Remapping is overwriting original software contained inside a cars ECU (Engine Control Unit) with tuned software. This software is referred to as the engine map because it is this program that controls the engine. Before the advent of serial port remapping the only way to overwrite this software was to replace the chip that contained the software. Now this can all be done by plugging in to the vehicles serial port and overwrite the engine map with the performance version. Remapping is not a gimmick it is a performance conversion that will seriously improve the power & drivability of your engine"
Hope this helps
Thanks Sharkie.
What do you think of this extract (http://www.torquecars.com/tuning/remapping-ecu.php) : it talks about parts failing due to extra stress after remapping such as pistons, bearings, airflow sensors etc????????

Out of whole page there is 1 paragraph on things that can fail. It pretty much recommend you doing it for the rest of it. Also remember that as clip pointed out, that is aimed at a different target audience where "tuning" japanese ****boxes is the go. The guys "tuning" them also like to push the limits of the engines and a lot of them break.
How often have you seen a Nissan turbo (Skyline or 180/200SX) smoking and sounding rough ..... the Jap engines have far less safety margins built in than the Germans .....
To put it this way, the current TSI and TDI engines are VERY understressed standard. Adding 22kw/50NM to the TDI is not going to make any difference as the safety margins built into the engines are very high.
The TSI for instance can go to 300kw/500+NM without a need for any internal work ..... ... that is truly amazing.
I know of some "chipped" VW's that have covered more than 100 000 trouble free kms. Try chipping a Falcon XR6T and see how long it will last. Some ex-Ford owners on here have attested to many components failing whereas you'd be hard pressed to find a VW owner complaining of a chip related failure on here.
The tuning houses (that have been around for ages) for the German cars are also very protective of their image and would not release products that they know may break something on your car. The bad press and cost of repairs will kill their business' very quickly indeed.
To this extent Oettinger offers a warranty (free of charge) with their remap that fully covers the drivetrain against all breakages caused by their software.
Have a look here at the info on the TDI chip. In particular look at the powergraphs as it shows just how much extra you get and where it is delivered.

Sharkie, your comments are very convincing. I dont doubt the fact that these engines have been designed for higher outputs. Oettinger have a reputation to uphold and hence the limited increase in power and torque, playing within safe margins.
I will be getting the remap regardless, as long as I can get better performance in the 80-100 km/h band.

As a matter of interest Sharkie, where did you get those numbers from? Do you reckon your source would be willing to ask the guys that have chipped their TDI's to be references for them? I really would like to chat with a TDI owner that's done the remap for their feedback.

Thanks dieseltig on the info about remapping. Sounds interesting. I know someone who had a chip put in their mazda 6 and claimed better performance and fuel economy. They reckon I should do it to the tig when we get it, The local mechanic did it. Would it void the warranty? Better performance and fuel economy sounds pretty good.
From what I can understand if you choose a reputable provider like oettinger you will have a better chance of getting a remap that it is within the manufacturers design parameters. As far as warranty, well it is an area which has been debated before but there is not definitive answer. My guess, any work you do on the vehicle may void the warranty. I guess there are a lot of people out there that do remapping on their vehicles and it is a risk you are taking. I guess in my case I will take the risk and remap when I get some free time from work. Just started on a new job and things are very busy at the moment.

hmmm, if the problem or damage can be blamed on the remap then yes, it could void your warranty. But if your headlights or your windscreen wiper motor stops, then arguably no. As Sharkie mentioned only a few posts ago, Oettinger guarantee your vehicle against any damage caused by their remapping anyway. If their remapping was in any way likely to cause damage, do you think they would offer this? So stick with the reputable ones (Oettinger, APR) that spend millions on design, working with VAG vehicles, and you probably won't go wrong.
Just out of interest to prove the level of development that organisations such as APR go to in order to provide the right product, they actually flew out a team from the US to Australia for a couple of weeks and worked alongside their Aust partners to specifically develop the maps for our Tigs and the other new VAG vehicles. That's a lot of $$$ and I'm sure they're not going to supply anything that's going to cause issues for them and jeopardize that sort of investment.
