    Service Costs - need feedback/advice

    Hi folks

    I have a 2010 TDI 6spd Auto 4Motion Tiguan.

It has just had it's 105,000km service, and I have been quoted the following prices for work that needs to be done soon or at the 120k service:

    Replace Front Struts = $900

Front Lower Control Arm Rear Facing Bushes + Wheel Alignment = $590

Timing Belt Kit & Water Pump Assembly = $1380

These are all Parts and Labor

Also got told the Rear Tailshaft Rubber Coupling has some splitting - no price for this - what should I be looking to pay? Is this something I could replace myself?

    All feedback/ideas/advice gratefully received!

I have just had both timing belts done on my vehicles within the last 12 months, similar ages, was about $1100 each. I've also got to do the control arm bushes, was quoted $310 from my mechanic, local independent who only does specific European vehicles.

Prices seem a little high compared to what I've been paying.

Genuine parts are usually dearer, as is the labour rate.

Prices seem about right to me. You could always cross-shop a few independents and see how you go.

If this is dealer service prices then it’s probably about normal. I’d be looking for a good independent workshop and/or ring around to get some quotes.

A couple of names that come up regularly (haven’t used as I’m not in Brissy) are Prestige Performance and Alba European. Though there’s probably others also.

Thank you for the feedback. Just to clarify - this is an independent, and the parts are not genuine VW. Was going to get control arm bush done separately to the front struts - will I need to get the wheel alignment done after the new bush is put in? I am assuming I will need a wheel alignment done after the new struts are installed, so don't want to get the alignment done twice!

Sounds very pricey. If you are handy you could save at least half of the cost by sourcing the front struts and control arm bushes yourself and changing them yourself.

I wouldnt recommend doing the timing belt yourself unless you have the necessary experience.

Buy the lower control bushes as a complete unit, already fitted in the aluminium block. They're quite cheap aftermarket, and about 10mins per side to do.

Mk5 onwards you do the need to press them out. You just replace the whole thing. Super easy.
